Default Rotel RB-985 power ratings???

I plan on getting a Rotel RB-985. I see the power rating is 100x5 in 8 ohm. Anyone know the power rating for 4 ohm? This amp is fine to run 4 ohm speakers on right? I was doing a google search and some rotel amps said something about it being alright to run 4 ohm in parallel which I think was an 8 ohm amp but it was a ton of small print so I couldn't find where it exactly said it.

Hi Sean,

I did a quick BING search for you and couldn't come up with anything re: 4-ohm power ratings either. Not even the Rotel Product Manual provides this information, which I find rather odd.

If you had a perfect amplifier and a perfect current source (wall outlet that had unlimited current availability), then each time you reduced the impedance by half, the power would be doubled. In the real world, amplifiers have real power supplies and their 4 ohm power rating is usually about 50% more than the 8 ohm rating.

Rotel is a quality brand and the RB 985 is THX certified. I would say, its 4 ohm continuous power rating is about 150 to 200 watts per channel (20Hz to 20kHz, 4ohm, <1% THD).

This is from page 5 of the manual.

I found it odd also the manual didn't. I guess the general consensus is 150-160 watts since the amp is 800 watts maximum for 4 ohm. Maybe it does more and those are conservative numbers. Be nice if was around 200 watts but 150 should do the job till I get another one. The DIN output...220 watts...what is that for?

Deutsches Institut für Normung

Basically, it is an organization which publishes quality standards for electronic equipment and many other items. That rating is simply one of those that they approve of.

Ha. I had to Google that one! I'm guessing with high international sales and business, Rotel felt the need to put in DIN information in the manual.

220 watts @ 4 Ohm, with 800 max draw across all 5 channels.

I would have preferred it had the amp had 200 to 250 watts @ 8 ohms. I just hope that Sean has enough head room and reserve power.

Hey Rhett, yeah he will be fine. The Rotel is a very stable amp, and the Mirage's aren't ''power pigs'', unlike my Linn's!

My mirage power ratings are as follows (all 4 ohm):
Omd-15=250 watts
omd-c2=200 watts
om-9=150 watts

I think I'll be fine. Some guy wants to give me some Emotiva ERM-1 speakers (use them for rear surrounds) and cash for my Mirage 550 towers. They are also 4 ohm and then I'll get another amp. Probably get a 2 channel rotel although I'm eyeing this rotel rmb-1066 amp which I might use for surrounds and power the omd's with the rb-985.

Hi Dennis,

Things are OK. How are you?

I am getting a little ancy for closing on the house, moving, and the work on the listening room.

The upgraded ARC LS10 is supposed to arrive tomorrow. All of the special cryoed 20 amp Romex, the 5 cryoed and "cooked" Oyaide R1 receptacles, and the 2 Oyaide receptacle covers are supposed to ship tomorrow.

If Sean doesn't have enough headroom, he will most likely begin to look like this.

Lol BD...I don't look like that but I do look rather funny with the haircut I just got. I look like a marine/leukemia patient. What I get for trying to cut my own hair...it's now really short as it had to be evened out. Lesson learned there.

Hi Rich! I'm glad to hear that things are progressing, albeit slowly my friend. But in all honesty, I think most of us here are more anxious to see your system completed than you buddy!
