Today I went to the nearest Hollywood Video to rent Star Trek and My Sister's Keeper but they told me they're not getting new movies anymore and that they are now just a retailer... Is this happening everywhere??? What is it about??

Video stores are going the way music store. I did not know that Hollywood Video was still in business. Soon the only way to rent videos is by mail, Redbox, or by streaming video through devices such as Roku.

All of the Hollywood Video stores in my area are still operating, but I haven't been inside one in years. So what's the deal? Are they just going to sell the inventory they have now and no longer receiver new releases?
Blockbuster, on the other hand, is closing down stores left and right. The movies are still overpriced and there are no good posters left. |

The Redbox near me only has SD DVDs. Both Netflix and Blockbuster have a large selection of BDs. I get my BDs from Blockbuster by mail for $9 per month.

Redbox does have them (at least in tampa Fl.) but they are in limited supply - also you cant reserve them on the websites yet - but coming soon I hear.

I wonder if it differs by area. I can reserve movies online via Redbox. Also, with companies like Universal pulling the plug on Redbox, you're not guaranteed all new releases.

There was one operating in one of the cities I work in and just the other day I noticed it's lights were off at 8 pm. I guess they went out of business too. There is one that I know of that's still open in the next city over. OH WELL

That isn't even remotely true. There are some stores in retail/sell-thru mode, but the majority still function as rental stores. My local one received 15 copies of Star Trek on Blu Ray to rent.

Stopped by my local Hollywood Video a few days ago. Despite not having much room they still have a better selection of blu-rays than Blockbuster. As far as not receiving new inventory they had several places on the shelf reserved for inventory that they trouble getting in because of the weather.

I have Suncoast video by me which may be affiliated with Hollywood. They're prices are always way too high so no one ever buys anything. I wouldn't be surprised if these all go under.
