Exclamation Would you buy a 42" LG plasma for 600 bucks?

My friend works for Panasonic and is involved with taking HDTV's to shows and such. After the TV is used it can't be resold as new. The manager decides what to do with it, and well, he gets some NICE freebies. No, this stuff is not hot. He's an honest Christian guy.

I don't know the exact model but he has a guy lined up to buy this 42" LG Plasma with HDMI. I don't know many technical specs now, but it may NOT do 1080p, just 1080i. Heck, it could be 720p for all I know. Considering similar LG sets I see on their site is $1200+, I say his asking price of $600 bucks is a sweet deal!

He has to offer it to other guy first who is very likely to take it off his hands. He suspects 60/40 in favor of the purchase. Now my dilemna.

If by some MIRACLE this clown does not buy it, would I be foolish to pass up this plasma set even though it may not do 1080p? It supposedly does do ATSC and I'll guess that means I can get over the air HD, like I do now.

I mean, I would REALLY have to find someplace for my HD tube set as I am not about to let that go. I am just not crazy about plasma because of the potential for burn-in, picture refresh, screen door effects, etc.

What thinketh ye all?

I wouldn't buy an LG 100" 'anytype' TV for $100!!! The brand is not designed for longevity. Either way you'll be looking for a new one in a year. I'd rather spend a couple thousand on a Sony or Panasonic and know that I'm good for 7 or 8 years.

If you like Plasma then yeah you should get it. If doesn't do 1080p its not a big deal anyways because of the size. everyone is bent on 1080p when you only really need it for 50in any screen lower you are just wasting your money.

Yeah, the more I think about it, it would make a good TV for my parents if I don't especially care for it.

February 2009 will be here in just 17 months. When analog goes away, they will need something to watch.

My only complaint with my Pany 37" plasma is the amount of heat it gives off, I should be warm and toasty this winter
