Connecting Old Speakers to New Receiver - Blu-ray Forum

Hey guys, for the past year or so I've been watching movies with wireless surround sound with the Sony DAV-HDX576WF.

I'm seriously considering buying a Pioneer Receiver to replace the Sony Unit. Here's my question:

Will I be able to use the 5 speakers and Subwoofer that came with my original system and connect them to the new Pioneer receiver? If so, is it difficult to connect speakers to a receiver that is not its own brand and use new wire to extend the speaker wire?

No!

It has nothing to do with being different receiver with different speakers. You have to pay attention to the Ohm and from what I have read your Sony speakers are as low as 1.5 - 3 Ohm.

I believe most receivers only go as low as 4ohm but the average is about 8ohm.

If this is not making any sense just asked more, but the bottom line is no you can't use your old speakers.(unless you connect them to an amp)

Ok. How much would the amp cost me, roughly?

Don't buy an amp in this situation. It's a complete waste and will cost way too much. You really need to look at a speaker upgrade.

So, basically, I should just buy a completely new surround sound set-up? Is that what it basically comes down to?

Yes, lucky for you there are a bunch of deals popping up all over the place. My suggestion is to not get another HTIB. Newegg.com has my front speakers on sale for $169 each and my center Channel is $99. I use monitor 70s for the rear too but you can get away with much smaller (Monitor 40s would be great). I suggest you pick them up because they are pretty much the best bang for the buck at that price. Pick up a refurbished receiver to drive them and try to get one with speaker pre-outs. That will let you add an amp down the road. You should be able to get a nice set up going for about $800.

You will be blown away by the difference when you compare your current set up and the one I am suggesting. It all really depends on your budget but given your current set up I am going to suggest you replace your speakers and receiver right from the beginning.

Pretty much man. You should consider just retiring the unit to a secondary room or bedroom, or selling it. Breaking it up isn't going to work well with outside components. It's one of the unfortunate aspects of most HTiB setups.

Might want to consider a budget and see what you can get.
