WWII in HD Blu-ray Out January 26, 2010 at Amazon.com

WWII in HD Blu-ray Review

I missed this even though I have The History Channel in HD. It doesn't seem to be repeating anytime soon, so has anybody seen this, does it have good replay value/is it worth getting?

I caught 1 1/2 episodes of it the other day. For the price, I definitely think it is worth it. Fashioned like a Ken Burns documentary, with letters from people framing the events. FASCINATING footage that really brings that times straight to life. Hard to watch at times...very graphic. Replay value? I don't think that it would, although there may be a chapter or 2 (I believe its 9 chapters) that you might have a real connection with & would want to watch again.

Saw the preorder price on AMAZON below $25. I definitely think that's worth a single viewing itself & am planning on getting it.

I have about 10 episodes recorded in my DVR and have watched a couple. These are very well made documentaries.

I watched all of them last week and they are great, but definitely not for the faint of heart due to all the graphic content. Definitely a release day buy if you are in to war documentaries/movies. I will be picking it up for sure!

Only two episodes in but I love this series. To me the europeon campaign and some of the Pacific seems to over shadow other parts of the war in the modern movies/TV (ie band of brothers, letters from iwo jima and saving private ryan) that I have personally seen.

That being said was nice to see some focus on other areas which I personally know little about. Thank you history channel even after two episodes this is a definite buy.

Also...
Can anyone recommend some good war movies/TV shows/Documentaries that I can watch to increase my knowledge of other WWII campaigns?

Gee! This is a rather broad question because there is a plethora of both good and bad movies/tv shows & documentaries which I could recommend!

Documentaries:
1. The World at War is an excellent documentary series (covers all of the theaters of WWII fairly well)
2. Russian Front (excellent if you want to learn about that theater of WWII since more Germans & Russians were killed & wounded on that front than in any other theater of WWII)

Movies:

1. Tora, Tora, Tora (probably the best Pearl Harbor movie made thus far - forget "PEARL HARBOR")
2. The Battle of Britain
3. The Battle of the Bulge
4. Schindler's List
5. Saving Private Ryan
6. A Bridge Too Far
7. Das Boat (probably the best submarine movie ever made & since I have been the U505 in Chicago numerous times I highly recommend this)
8. Letters from Iwo Jima
9. Flags of Our Fathers
10. Sink the Bismarck

TV Shows:

1. Band of Brothers
2. The Pacific (Premiering on HBO in 2010) http://www.hbo.com/events/pacific/

I tried to avoid recommendations with WAY TOO MUCH propaganda because there are hundreds of those but if you want to see a propaganda film which is considered a FILM classic, see Triumph of the Will. It will definitely give you an idea about what the Greatest Generation was fighting against during WWII!
Hope this was helpful!

Rich

Thanks, Ive seen some of these but will look into those that I have not...
btw I have seen Triumph of the will and granted its total Nazi propaganda, I feel it is well worth a viewing from a historical perspective as well as to see what a poweful speaker hitler was and how he captured the attention of germany. Even without understanding his native language the power and passion that he felt in his messages to the people rang through. Definitly one of the finest historical films in my opinion to come out of WWII, for the simple fact that its shows the brainwashing of a nation. I can only imagine how bad the world would have been if the war had turned out differently.

Russian front is now added to my netflix!!

Your welcome!

BTW, I forgot The Bridge at Remagen & The Longest Day (although this one is rather dated and some of the history is a little questionable; at least IMHO)!

I always like to watch WW2 Docs, i can stay up for hours watching them.
However, what i didn't like about this new History Channel HD version, is the simple fact they took regular 4:3 movies and zoomed in to fit a 16:9 screen, which made the playback viewing very hard to handle for me. I got dizzy a lot, as the image is zoomed in too much, and due to the nature of these clips, a lot of movments, shaks and so on. I ended up not watching the whole thing, even though i DVRed the full seires.

Thats just my taste, as i usually do like when they crop a 4:3 image to fill me 16X9 TV, it just didn't work for me here, it would have been better if they left it as 4:3.

I still think the old British doc. The World At War, which was remastered 2 years ago for a dvd boxset is by far the best doc ever avout WW2 - i ca't wait fo it to come out on BD.

this series is great, i already archived it in hd off the history channel, but id love to see the bluray version. they made a point of saying how that the film footage they showed had all been transfered using new hd cameras, might see more detail in the bluray. some scenes show graphic death, actual combat, other life in general. i thought the narration was great, with the younger voice fading into the real aging soldiers voice, all of the words their own, telling stories of their experiences. great wwii documentary.

Nice, for a moment I thought they were trying to pull a fast one by releasing it on DVD already. They did manage to fool a few coworkers into thinking they were watching a HD show on a CRT tv with SD cable. It looked great on my Directv in HD so the Blu-ray is a Definite must buy.

Excellent, I'm glad to hear it. This is going to be a bit of a blind buy for me, but since I love just about anything WW2 related, I'm sure I'll like it.

+1 Good Series/Movies...but I'd also add Ken Burns' "The War"...it's an excellent series.

as mentioned earlier, this film is definitely not for the faint of heart, with a number of real footage of images others dont want to remember or see again.

in regards to the list, you forgot the best one out there,
