Default AntiVirus Pro

Well...today was interesting. I recently purchased a Macbook Pro. I decided to break out the old laptop today. It did its job for the 5 years she's been in service. I'm on it not even 30 mins and the thing completely becomes hijacked buy a Virus program that looked like it was from Microsoft. ctrl alt dlt wouldn't function. It kept linking me to adult movie sites lol. Very chaotic. They call this scare ware because it basically tricks you into thinking your problem was severely in trouble.

Youtube really didn't help me as far as getting it fixed. I tried a bunch of things and managed to close down the system but from what I've read, the lovely people who made this thing are constantly changing the file names so it's hard to search for. I found a few but decided to blow the whole thing away. I couldn't find it at all in my registry files.

I'm still ticked AVG didn't pick it up. My main reason for posting this is my laptop is running like a champ now. So it appears to be back to normal. However, just recently my keyboard started to become inconsistent. My letters were all messed up and jumping all over the place. I know I've been drinking a lot of eggnog but I'm not that bad of typist. I rebooted it thinking it was a glitch. I just updated everything and she's back to normal with SP3 but no budge. Is this virus related or is this just a mere coincidence? Same day my laptop gets infected, my keyboard craps out?

If you get the virus...start praying. Anyone else get it? Thanks

EDIT: now the keyboard is working

My boss got it on his work laptop. It made quite a mess. He had to turn it over to the company IT guy for a reformat because it would look like it was gone, then something weird would pop up.

Yep, had to reformat to get rid of the new version of this virus. Its a piece of work, really nasty. It actually starts to download other viruses to infect your system, so if you don't get rid of it fast, your done as diner.

Had the latest Symantec software and still didn't detect it. Also, all the removal guides online are out-of-date. The virus has changed and is near impossible to remove. In the end reformatting was the only way to be sure. So I nuked the site from orbit.

Yup...you're right about the removal guides being out of date. The people responsible kept coming up with different naming schemes and even more headache. I'm an IT guy and I couldn't get rid of it lol. Had no other option than to reload the OS. These guys are good. None of the high-end virus software was detecting it. Really nasty stuff.

I couldn't help but appreciate the genius of this one. One minute I was cursing, then I was saying, "Brilliant". LOL.

I felt really bad for the tons of people who will get this bugger and have no idea what to do. Reformat? Whats that?

'Nasty' may be an understatement. One of my co-workers picked it up last week; four networking specialists were brought in to address the situation, but to no avail - it was toast by then. The only thing they could do was reformat the HDD, then re-image it. Apparently, any attempt to close the program by the user (e.g. clicking on the top right hand corner with the mouse pointer) will trigger an install of the virus; two possible ways around this is i) using [Alt] + [F4] to kill the active program (i.e. the running browser), or ii) bringing up Task Manager, and ending the session by highlighting the browser program (under the Processes tab), then clicking on the End Process button.

I'll admit it...I thought so too. Very smart program. It really looks like a legit virus program. Probably someone who is on unemployment and has nothing else to do decided to give the world a headache.

Back up your information...I was able to kill it temporarily and back up my data before I wiped it. Others may not be so lucky.
