Default Looking for a new CD Player....

I seriously need to upgrade my CD player... my current HK FL-8380 is slowly dying on me and i've had many problems with it for a while. So, nows the best time to upgrade.

I was looking into the Emotiva ERC-1 thats selling at $319 for the holidays... I've read only good reviews of Emotiva gear overall... Just wondering what other suggestions you guys might have for me to look into. I have about
$500 MAX to spend on something new.

Thanks,
Joe.

Within that range I'd probably go for the Emotiva. You could also look into the Oppo dvd players, but they aren't listed on their site anymore. Finally, here is one additional option I came up with, http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo...umber=MACD5003

I second the Emotiva for that price range.

I was also looking into the Oppo since the reviews for the 83unit is great on pretty much every site I read... but I want to have a separate unit.

That Marantz looks nice also but I'm wondering how it would sound teamed up with the SC-07 ?

Well Marantz receivers are known for their warmth and musicallity, so perhaps since the Pioneers are to the bright side, IMO, the may balance each other out...

After spending a few days looking into this and reading up on the web I finally made a decision and went with the Marantz CD5003. I was able to get it for $275 instead of $350 new in box with a 3 year warranty. Not to bad I think!

I tried it out in a few stores but what sold me on it was the last placed I checked out. The guy is a Pioneer and Monitor Audio seller so I was able to test it on a system that was fairly colse to my own. He hooked it up to a Pioneer SC-25 and a pair of Monitor Audio RX6's. The CD5003 sounded really good and was offered at a really good price. While I was there he also made me try out a NAD player. I think it was the C545B. Look wise I didnt like it that much but it sounded sweet. It was a little brighter and bass heavy compared to the Marantz and there was a $200 price difference between the two units.

I got it home last night but haven't installed it yet. Since it stayed in the car for about an hour at -20 I figured i'd let it settle to room temp before I pulled it out of the box. So tonight will be testing night.

The Emotiva was #1 on my list but a few things played againts it... The price of $319 (xmas discount) was nice, but when I factored in the shipping, duty and exchange rate the unit was closer to $400-450. Also, them being in the states would have been a pain to ship out and have it sent back. Not counting the possible problems the transit time could cause... lost, damages etc...

More to come...

There is a known problem on the Emotiva cd player, where it cuts off the beginning of a cd when you first play it on certain discs. Apparently it is a fault of the chip used and can't be fixed. It is probably good you did not pick it up.

Hey CK,

Thanks for the tip... I didnt know it had an issue and that would have pissed me off and most likely returned the unit. I still haven't had a chance of connecting the CD5003, with all the xmas stuff going on.

But todays is a "stay at home and do shit" kinda day so ill setting it all up.

Congrats on the new CDP! I've always personally been a fan of Marantz products and I'm sure you'll be pleased with yours.

Merry Christmas,

John

Thanks! Just the small try outs in the stores made the purchase feel right. It sounded good on all different systems including the last one I tried it with... so yeah, should sound nice

At $280 I know i'm not getting the build and sound quality of its bigger brothers in the refference series but I still think/feel I got a good player.

And Merry Xmas to you bud!
