Has anyone else experienced problems playing the new BD of "Audition," the Takashi Miike film?
A couple days ago I started to play it on my PS3 and it worked just fine at first. But, as I exploered the features of the disc, I started the film over with the audio commentary turned on. A few minutes into the presentation the picture froze and the sound stopped completely and it stayed that way. I stopped the disc entirely, then tried to play it from the beginning, but it wouldn't play at all. And I've played other BDs and DVDs on the PS3 since the problem occurred, so it's not my player. I'm planning to eventually replace it (when I can find it again for around the $17 range I paid for it at Amazon) and see if that works, but please tell me your experience with this title on BD. Thanks. |

I did not have any problems - I watched the entire Audition BD on my PS3 without any problems. I did not listen to the commentary, but I don't think that would make a difference with something like this - all audio streams are being read at once, just the one you've selected is being outputted on the audio connection, so a data read error on the disc would be apparent no matter what audio stream you were listening to. Also, the fact you can't even get the disc to start up again makes it sound like your disc is definitely defective. I'd try emailing Amazon to set up a replacement - they're pretty good about things like that.

Well, I replaced the disc with another copy and I'm still having the same problem with the audio commentary. The playback freezes (a little earlier this time, soon after the first scene, after the title card that says "Audition" and during the close-up of the rippling water, at roughly six minutes into the film). I keep my PS3 updated with the most recent software and none of my other discs are exhibiting this problem.
Is anyone else having this issue with playing the audio commentary of "Audition"? I'd especially like to hear from those who use a PS3 to play Blu-ray discs. |

I just noticed that now no disc will play on my PlayStation 3. NOTHING. I've tried several different titles from my collection. I've always taken very good care of my PS3 and was always careful with it; although it is nearly two years old, it looked and worked almost like new. The machine was working fine before I tried playing "Audition" and playback froze. Just a few hours ago I was watching another movie on disc on the PS3 with no issues.
Obviously, the PS3's disc drive was fatally damaged while trying to playback and restart the Audition discs over and over. Everything else seems to be okay, but what's a PS3 without the use of its disc drive? Now I have to replace the console. This is absolutely outrageous and unacceptable and I'm going to write to Blu-ray.com's administrators and to Shout Factory about this issue. No one should buy or use the Blu-ray disc of "Audition," at least not the audio commentary and at least not on the PS3, since there is a definite risk it will fatally damage your console. Shout Factory owes me for this one. |

A disc (faulty or otherwise) can't affect a PS3. At all. More then likely your laser (or drive I guess) was already dying and you just happened to notice it with Audition. You can have a completely corrupted fully scratched disc running in your drive and it won't somehow break it.
Just bad luck on your part. |

And, I've used scratched discs in the PS3 and they played fine, but it seems somthing was wrong, datawise or with the encoding on the Audition disc. Well, I'm glad at least the prices for PS3's have gone down somewhat. Maybe I can find a great deal for the holiday season. Surely don't appreciate such a spontaneous purchase, though. I'm sorry, but it is extremely unlikely, borderline impossible, for a Blu-ray disc's data to destroy physical hardware in any way. The laser simply tries to read the data, and gives up after a certain amount of tries if it cannot, resulting in a freeze or error message. The laser is simply not programmed to overwork itself to the point of failure. The only way I can see any disc harming any piece of physical hardware is if the disc were physically defective in some way and broke apart in the drive, and that obviously does not seem to be the case here.
Many people have purchased the Audition BD, and yours is the very first report of such an occurrence happening. Just probabilistically speaking, the odds of your PS3 being defective are infinitely greater than the odds of the Audition BD somehow causing this to happen. Correlation does not equal causation. There have been similar topics in the past where people blame the very last Blu-ray disc (or PS3 game or XBox 360 game, etc.) they played for the breakdown of their hardware, but no common thread between these events is ever established - except the fact that the underlying hardware is faulty. I don't mean to attack you, as I am certainly sympathetic to your current predicament - it is no fun having a broken BD player. But I think you'd do well to just focus on getting it repaired, and not waste time barking up the wrong tree as Shout Factory is never going to do anything for you and there will never be a way to show the disc has done anything wrong because there are no other occurrences of this out there and your disc will surely play fine in other players. And we also don't want to spread false information and make other people avoid Audition needlessly. Call Sony and try to get the thing repaired so you can go back to enjoying BD discs. ![]() |

Just an aside - you keep mentioning the commentary. Were you able to play it fine with the normal audio, and it only froze when you tried the commentary? Or did you always go straight to the commentary?
I mentioned before that all audio streams are being read by the laser simultaneously, and your choice of audio stream just decides which the PS3 decodes and routes to your audio output. This still stands, so the issue of the laser reading the audio commentary vs. normal audio should be a non-issue as they are both read simultaneously. |
