Default Best TV for around $800

My parents new a new set and they're in a hurry. I think $800 is about as high as they want to go.

What are you/your parents looking for? LCD or Plasma? What size TV? 32" 40" 52" ???

Although at that price point, 40"-42" might be the most practical...

i'd probably snag a 50" panny plasma 720p: $830 shipped

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-VIER...9942806&sr=1-2

(unless you're sitting within 8 feet of the TV, 720p or 1080p wont make any difference)

You can get an LN40B630 from Best Buy right now for $799. 1080p, 120hz, etc.

They don't care if it's LCD or plasma. I'm just trying to get them the best bang for the buck.

It's a smaller living room so doesn't have to be huge and they *may* want to keep their current ent. unit which would limit it to 32".

They have DirecTV and a PS3.

Is 1080p needed at 32"?

600hz? 3/2 pulldown?
The 600HZ is the sub field drive and not the real refresh rate. The true 1080p/24 frame rate feature is for those that want the best quality from BLU-RAY since the 60HZ 3:2 pulldown process is bypassed. Camera pans and fast moving motion looks like film with true 24P refresh rates. 60HZ only displays also have a good picture and they cost less money.

If you are looking for the true multiplies of the original frame rate feature then a Panasonic 96HZ V10 would be the best choice. V10's start at around $2,000 when they are in stock.

A 96HZ Samsung PN50B650 for under $1,200 would be the cheapest 96HZ plasma in a 50 inch.

For those that do most of their viewing directly from the center of the room a LCD would be fine. A 120HZ Sony KDL-40V5100 for $879 would be a good choice.

Here is a good link to read regarding a review summary of 1080P 120HZ TV's that now have a street price of under $900. Ignore the list prices mentioned in the post. The street prices are usually around $850 or less for these displays.

can a 37-inch fit?

for both a 32 or 37, I'd recommend Panasonic's S1 series LCDs

TC-L32S1

TC-L37S1

Panasonic's Alpha-IPS panel delivers the best LCD viewing angles. Crucial for a family TV, especially a smaller TV.

Not to mention those panels are very sharp and if nothing changed drastically since 2007----have very natural color.

Samsung makes a very nice 1080P 32 inch LCD with Edge Lit LED backlighting for around $928 mail order. It is only 1.2 inches thick and only 28.2 pounds with stand. If they are seating more then 5 feet from the screen a 720P would be cheaper option.

http://www1.bottomdollar.com/p__Samsung_UN32B6000_32_LCD_TV,__729070959/search=UN32B6000

Samsung UN32B6000 (1080P/24 correctly refreshed at 120HZ when Auto Motion Plus (AMP) is turned off)

For under $800 a 1080P Samsung LN32B650 32 inch LCD can be purchased. 120HZ model

32" is as big as we can go. Thanks for all the input. I'll be researching tonight and probably buying something tomorrow.
