Default Advertising for BD in Australia/Asia

Just thought I'd let you guys know what's happening in this area of the world.

Should point out we're usually about roughly a year or so behind the US as far as technology goes.

Thought some of you might be itnerested to know that in this neck of the woods the blu-ray advertising campaign has suddenly stepped up massively over teh last month with Spidey 3 being released.

In JB HiFi (Australia's biggest audio/visual retailer) there is blu-ray advertising everywhere, banners hanging from ceilings, larger catalogue of movies, lots of TV advertising on network television and literally NOTHING about HD-DVD anywhere.

You would think that in a very sophisticated/developed market like Australia (i.e. where much like America there is a lot of consumer spending) if HD-DVD were serious about their product, they wold be fighting head to head against BR.

But seriously, there's like a tiny stall of HD-DVD's of probably about 15-20 titles. That's it.

I suppose, Asia is a market that heavily favours Sony over Microsoft (i.e. Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia are all Sony strongholds) so perhaps M$ are just giving up before the battle has been even begun here?

Either way, definitely good news for BR supporters. But do you think represents HD-DVD giving up by way of not trying to win new (and lucrative) markets? Or do you think HD-DVD is merely consolidating its focus on the US in the hope that if they win that market, the flow-on effect will win all the others? (i.e. if all the US based studios turn to HD-DVD then HD-DVD wins ALL global markets by default).

hmmm....

G'day all,

Yeah Tyler, I know what you mean. Every where I look there is Blu-ray advertising. In theatres, on T.V, in catalogues, in stores... everywhere and yet nothing for HD-DVD (not that I'm complaining) but it really has just all of a sudden come out of nowhere and is in full gear now. It's all very positive. Go Blu-ray!!!

Good question. I remember darinp2 bringing up this point a few times, for instance what would Uni or P/DW do if they get serious about selling high-def movies in, say, Japan. It doesn't make much sense.

It almost seems to lend credence to the theory that nobody on the HD-DVD side (even Toshiba) is really serious about winning the battle, and they're just trying to delay Blu-ray's adoption.

enjoy

I haven't seen much HD-DVD promotion here by Toshiba. The players are certainly not getting much air time or even print space.

Meanwhile, Sony seems to be the only one that's promoting the Full HD concept. Pioneer has only just released their expensive player here. Samsung has not and neither has Panasonic. I also saw a wall of poster at a music store promoting the release of Spider-man 3 in three formats: VCD (URGH!), DVD and BD.

i'm in singapore, but so far, all the local video retail store i went to selling bd, they also selling equal number of hd-dvd. and they are all quite expensive, selling above S$50 = US$33.
for the player side, only sony join hand with our broadcaster to promote hidef programs using their bravia tv and convinently mention bd. sony themselves only bring in the bdp-s1e at S$1500 = US$1000.
and during our quaterly computer fair (yes, the organiser think we are so in need of computers and IT gadgets, they had to organise it quaterly ), you can then see hd-dvd player.
