Sony announces PS3 price drop, 40GB SKU, new colour for Japan

Quote:
In Japan the 40GB model, which is numbered the CECHH00 series, will cost ¥39,980 (approx $341), and will come in a choice of two different colours--the standard black, and a new colour called ceramic white. On the same day--November 11--that the 40GB model goes on sale, the Dual Shock 3 controller will also become available.

The Dual Shock 3 was announced by Kaz Hirai at this year's Tokyo Game Show, and the new controller will feature both the SixAxis controls and a rumble function. The new wireless controller will cost ¥5,500 ($47) and also be available in black or ceramic white.

The first 200,000 people who buy a PlayStation 3 in Japan after October 17 will receive a free copy of the Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray movie.

Just before the launch of the new SKU, Sony will be dropping the price of the 20GB and 60GB versions of the console--both which are still on sale in Japan. The new prices will come into effect on October 17 and will be ¥44,980 ($383) for the 20GB version, and ¥54,980 ($469) for the 60GB model--a ¥5,000 ($43) drop for each.

Well one good thing about the white is you don't have to worry about dust.
Seriously let Sony continue production on the original 60 gig and I would buy a white one.

80 gig=for people who want all the next gen features, who do not care as much for backwards compatibility.
60 gig= for the hardcore Sony gamer, who loves just as much Blu-ray as he does PS2 DVD's
40 gig= for the occasional user, mostly for the movies, but can enjoy the games aswell.

This would be great if Sony did this it would cover ALL the bases.

the 60GB version will be phased out from all PAL territories (it's equal to 80GB in USA, software emulation).

Yeah, I was elated when I saw this yesterday as I've been holding out here waiting for the prices to drop in Japan. Then, just about an hour ago I was really bummed when I read the specs on a Japanese news site that the new 40 gb. model won't have SACD capabiltiy. None of the new blu recorders have it either so the only option is go for one of the original models at a higher price. Sony must be giving up on SACD and perhaps is just thinking about some new possible music format like blu-cd - your favorites released in full lossless audio on blu disks. Now that would be something!

Wasn't $400 the price of the PS2 when it came out? I think this is going to be a big shift for Sony, I think players will fly off the shelves this quarter. Go Blu!

no doubt. and with Ratchet & Clank and UT3 on the horizon, people will be stampeding to stores and tearing the PS3's off of the shelves.
