Hello fellow movie buffs. Just wondering if there are any kind of Outdoor Movie Festival/ Cinema operating in your part of the world during Summer?
Here in Sydney, Australia, the Official 2010 St. George Open Air Cinema Program has just kicked off, with Tickets going on sale this Thursday.
This annual Event kicks off on 12th January, 2010 and finishes on 20th February, 2010.

The St. George OpenAir Cinema features over a month of record premiere or preview movie screenings against a stunning backdrop that spans the Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge and city skyline to offer an unrivalled cinematic experience.

Movies will be played on a giant 350 square metre screen rising from the harbour to stand three storeys high before an 1850 seat grandstand and 32 speaker surround sound system.

St.George OpenAir Cinema is located at Fleet Steps, Mrs Macquaries Point, Sydney—adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens. This area is located just to the south of Mrs Macquaries Chair. Maybe it's me, but wouldnt there be a lot of distractions being so close to the harbor. Its pretty, but with the noise of ships, cars, planes etc, it seems like it could be quite distracting. For me, concert = yes, movies = no.

Now don't freak out about this, but they screen movies every summer at the Hollywood Cemetery. I've had friends talk about it before and thought it sounded weird, but I finally went for my first time this past summer to watch Singin' in the Rain and had a great time. After a walk through the main cemetary areas, the crowd gathers on an undeveloped grassy lot that sits behind a building with a long blank wall, and that's where the movie is projected. She packed us a picnic basket, we layed out our blanket and folding chairs, and after the sun set, the musical started up. Never seen the movie before and after it was over, I thought, "Man, I want this on Blu-ray now!" lol.

Where it is located in Sydney, it's actually very nice. Not noisy, but you do see bats flying nearby as the Royal Botanic Gardens is right next door. And the water in front of the cinema, there's hardly any boats. They are much further away. Cars? what cars? No cars in this area except for parking near the entrance.

I would love it if something like that was in my area. I have fond memories of going to the drive-in theaters when I was a kid.

We got something call Movies In The Park here in Montreal every summer. Not at this time cause from November to March it's not exactly the best time to play movies outside here

Where I'm going is waaay better than drive in theatres. You got Restaurant quality food, Bar, Coffee cart, the full Surround Sound (10-12 Speakers) and the stunning views of Sydney Harbour and city!

Anyway, all tickets were sold out in under 3 hours when they went on sale at 9am Sydney Time....

Quote:
Movie goers crashed the website of the open air cinema by Sydney Harbour this morning in a buying frenzy that saw 25,000 tickets sold in the first half hour.

By 9.30am, just 30 minutes after tickets went on sale, many Sydneysiders were locked out of the St George OpenAir Cinema website while others helped themselves to more than half the 43,000 tickets available for the six-week schedule of movies at Mrs Macquaries Point.

By 9.45am the tally had risen to 26,000, a St George bank spokeswoman said.

The three most popular picks were premiere sessions for Bran Nue Dae, Invictus and Nine, the spokeswoman said.

Tickets are also available directly from the Ticketmaster website.

The cinema offers a three-storey-high screen and a bar and restaurant. Cinemagoers are not allowed to take their own food.

Other open air theatres open this summer include Bondi Openair, North Sydney's ME Bank Starlight Cinema, Centennial Park's Ford Fiesta Moonlight Cinema, Homebush's Movies in the Overflow and Tropfest in the Domain.

There are a few such events here in Kansas City there. The big one is in in a large courtyard-type area in Crown Center. There are two large, inflatable screens. They show a movie every Friday for a couple of months. If it's a good movie the g/f and I will pack a picnic. Unfortunately, there are kids running around unsupervised, so it can be a little distracting. The Kansas City Public Library also shows movies on its roof. They are usually less popular, more artsy movies.
