Default Fanboy-ism and PS3

I don't know if this is an appropriate topic for this forum, but I generally like the opinions of this group and I feel that I have to bring up something that seems to be plaguing the game industry, at least where I live. I am twenty-six-years-old and yet feel sometimes that I am in Elementary School again because I find myself getting irritated at the inflamatory nature of other gamers and feel rather stupid for letting it get to me. I love my PS3 but am very quiet about it and do not want to taunt others because they like something different than I do. Yet I feel sometimes that I have to buy games from Amazon because every store employee makes a snide comment about how I should buy a certain game for the 360 or how I should trade in my PS3 and get a 360. Also, I like to research games but every gaming website seems to care about nothing but sales figures and, while I do not want to care about sales figures, I see so many spouting so much ridiculousness about sales figures that they almost become more important to me than actually enjoying gaming as my hobby. Do any of you guys feel like this? I don't want to care that more people bought 360's in November but then there are messages in the forums that basically call anyone who likes PS3 an idiot because the Xbox sells more systems than PS3 does. I have a thing about being called an idiot, and wish that I could just read about games without having to wage some stupid console war that some people apparently take more seriously than the real wars we are currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The holidays seem to make people particularly ridiculous and leads me to wonder if I just notice the negative people or if most people who play games really are so immature that they dislike other people simply because they play different video games? I guess my question is, does this fanboy-ism seem more prevalent to you guys in this console generation, and does it affect your enjoyment of video games? Because right now it is affecting my enjoyment, and I wish I could just get back to enjoying the games instead of fretting about whether they will do well or not.

I am not much of a gamer, but if I were, I would own multiple consoles.

Nope, theres plenty of people here who love their ps3 along with me!

I can understand someone trying to explain to you why they think something is great, but to down something you have that they think is inferior makes them the idiot.

That's the thing of it, I do own multiple consoles, both Wii and 360, I just happen to like the PS3 the best, the PS3 picture is much cleaner on my 1080p projector than the 360 picture, and while I own Gears of War and Mass Effect and am looking forward to Mass Effect 2, I buy most if not all multi-plat games on my PS3. To some people that seems to be equivalent to me spitting in their mother's face. I just don't get why people have to go out of their way to diss what other people like. I don't walk into movie theaters and shout "BOO!" But's it's not like I can just stop using the internet or shop solely on Amazon. A: I need to work and need the internet to do it, and B: I need to trade games in sometimes to afford new ones. I'm not rich enough to just buy all the items I want.

I think that PS3-based sales is important as it gives money to people to make more PS3 games without limitations.

For example, if Uncharted didn't sell as well as it did, then we wouldn't of had Uncharted 2. Its pretty straightforward line of thinking of how sales impact game production and development.

I understand that good sales leads to design decisions, I just wish that all the emphasis wouldn't go to what are otherwise good sales. For example, last month Sony sold 700k PS3s and MS 800k 360s, sales figures I thought were respectable for both, and now a good chunk of internet posters are acting as if that somehow proves PS3 players are idiots because they bought something that sold slightly worse than what they like. When the PS3 sells well I don't feel the need to taunt people who like the 360, but apparently a lot of people do. That's what I don't understand. I am a Chiefs fan, and routinely got shouted down by Broncos fans when I lived in KC, but I don't understand how people can get so riled up over sports and video games are much the same to me. These things shouldn't be serious, and I try not to care, but apparently I'm thin-skinned enough that when people call me an idiot it gets to me. When something is minor, as those November sales figures were, I don't understand how a large number of Xbox fans can act as if they just received a personal promise from Shakira that she would **** them stupid. I don't want to let that bother me, but it's hard to avoid when it gets thrust in your face from just going to the store or reading an internet article.

This goes all the way back to the NES/GENESIS battles. People feel the need to justify their purchases. This can be done by stating how much they like their product or by calling you an idiot for not buying the same.

When I get confronted by those types of people, I spout the facts that matter most about the systems and remind them that it isn't always good to do something just because everyone else is doing it. Also, if they are that adamant about the Xbox360 being better because "more people own it," I also mention the fact that owning a PS3 means I'll encounter fewer prepubescent nutjobs because the install base of PS3 owners tends to be far more mature. Granted, that one usually sets them off on a tangent much like the attitudes of which I just pointed out to them. That always makes me laugh because they are effectively proving my point right after I made it.

Oh, and just to add to my personal situation, I own both the PS3 & Xbox360. If a game that I want is exclusive, I'll consider getting the Xbox360 version after trying it as a rental first. If it's on both consoles and I want it, I will outright buy it for the PS3 from the get-go. I just know that I'll get a more consistent and stable experience out of my PS3. That being said, I only own Gears Of War for PS3. Roommate bought Bioshock when it originally released and I traded in Guitar Hero III when the far superior Rock Band was released... which I subsequently purchased for the PS3. Hell, If I had bought Rock Band for the Xbox360, I wouldn't be able to have all of the DLC content that I currently own since it wouldn't be able to fit on my Xbox360 HDD.

Anyone who calls him/herself a 'fanboy' is a childish idiot. Who cares what system sells more? Who cares what 'exclusives' that system may have or what which is better 'PSN or Xbox Live? I love my PS3 and my Xbox 360. Sure, I may play my 360 more but that doesn't mean I don't like my PS3. I play shooters more and I like the X360 controller more. I still play my PS3 for fighting games, platformers, PSN games and of course, Blu-Rays. Every console has it's strengths and weaknesses, arguing about it just makes you a moron. BTW, I never go in Gamestop (No offense to anyone who works there, unless you participate in the idiocy) anymore as it seems these 'Fanboy' dorks seem to huddle up in there like the creatures from 'I Am Legend'. Case in point, if you like one system, play it and shutup, we don't want to hear why mommy won't let you get the other one.

I disagree with that statement which I bolded. People should actually care about what system sells more, the exclusives available for each, and the quality of networking. These are determining factors in improving quality content for the superior hardware abilities of the PS3. Example: Had games like Ghostbusters, Assassin's Creed 1& 2, Batman: AA, Mirror's Edge, etc. all been developed specifically for the PS3, I believe that the mechanics, graphics, and overall experience could have been better. Not saying that they weren't enjoyable, but I think they all could have "been more."

The biggest "idiot" arguement that I encounter at the moment is that the Xbox360 has so much more content. I always say, "There may be more content, but all of the best content for Xbox360 is also on PS3 along with Uncharted 1 & 2, MGS4, InFamous, LittleBigPlanet, God Of War III, FFXIII Versus, and many others that offer amazing gaming experiences. Most of the content on Xbox360 is fluff by comparison to the PS3 catalogue."

I think some people freak out over something they don't control. I remember when I was younger I always watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and bought all the toys. And when another friend of mine bought a different kind of toy, I would get pissed (aka: worried) because I thought it would effect TMNT. Did it matter if my friend bought a different toy? No. And I understand that now. Because I'm an adult. I think some people think this way about their systems and who they support.

But some people are different and they want to feel / prove / think that they made the right (aka: perfect) choice and that they're not missing out on anything. So to make up for any worries, they bash people who bought something else.

I should have explained what I said a little better. I was talking about people who babble to you about the sales, network and exclusives. Also, what makes you think that if they were specifically developed for the PS3 they would have been 'that' much better? If they were developed on the PS3, then they pretty much were all they could be on the PS3. I'm sure if they wanted to make the controls, graphics or mechanics better, they would've already.

It's not feasible to assume that if they are developing a game for multiple platforms that they are going to be able to maximize its potential on the PS3 when they will have to make it work for the Xbox360 as well. No matter what anyone says, the business end of multiplatform development will always require that the final product will cater to the lowest common denominator. And, since no game on the Xbox360 has ever come close to Uncharted 2 in the areas of game mechanics and graphics, is it not likely that the Xbox360 is actually capable of such quality... especially given that the Xbox360 has had such a large head start and better developer support from the console manufacturer. Therefore, a multiplatform game is somewhat "crippled" from its very earliest days of conception.

Petra is there anything about the 360 that you might say is better than the PS3? Startup sound? Color? Anything? Or does the 360 absolutely pale in comparison to the magnificence of the PS3?

I hope you realize what I am getting at.

Trust me when I say this "Every console has its Ying and Yang." Take what people say about things, in this case consoles/games, with a grain of salt...It is troubling that people have to resort to bickering over which did this, what sold this and who has this...For me it's just enjoying the games I like and love...Both with my current PS3/X360 there is a love/hate relationship...Leave the console war to those in the industry and don't let the fanboy syndrome get to you...I know it does get irritating reading reviews/comments of others bashing a console/game because the person doesn't have the system or has ever played the game...I never had a sales person tell me buy this because its better here or sell one of my consoles because it's inferior...I can careless less what their opinion is because I've done my own time reviewing on consoles/games...A lot of members here have the right attitude and just enjoys their own preference...I like what many have already said and just know your not alone in the thought that people always try to one up each other in a pretty childish way...

Fanboys has always been around its just that since the internet is so popular now, and everyone can post their opinion or make entire blogs, its extremely worse now.

Do the sales affect how i enjoy a game? no, take uncharted 1 and 2 for example, those games sold nowhere near the likes of halo, gears, cod or whatever, but the gameplay is so good that it doesn't even matter.

It won GOTY for a reason.

Guys, let's not make this about 360 vs PS3. I don't want this to spiral out of control and become another system wars thing, because I think I meant it to be the opposite of that. A sort of venting of steam because there are some people who take these things way too seriously. I was just wondering if anyone else was as frustrated as i am in the way that some other gamers seemingly cannot allow other people to enjoy something different from them and will blow up any miniscule news story to mount "evidence" against their perceived "enemies."

I agree 100%.The GI news story on the 53% failure rate on 360's was used as a weapon for a while. Still, people, just enjoy your consoles, how much did we pay for them again? Exactly.
