Smile Can somebody please tell me....

What good speakers have?

I don't understand what speakers need to be/have? Something about HDMI or watts? To be honest, I'm not fussed about HD sound as all I have at the moment is the TV speakers which are surely not HD.

ALL I need is something to give the dialog a more powerful punch, as I can barely hear it over footsteps and general movement at the moment due to poor balanced audio discs....Also, in Heat, some of the dialog is SO quiet, even when its on top volume.

So, I'm just looking for speakers, 3.1, 5.1, doesn't matter. As long as it's under £100 and will be an improvement.

Hope you can understand what I'm talking about, and thanks so much for your help in advance.

Have a great christmas and a happy new year

Speakers are not involved in converting digital to analog or reading bits off a disc surface. It's all about build quality of the parts used to take the incoming analog signal and reproduce the audio through the tweeter, midrange cone and woofers. This involves crossovers, drivers and the materials used in the diaphragms and cabinet. The best speakers have enough mass and an optimized design to minimize room and vibration influences so they can perform the way the engineer intended. For example, the teardrop housing around the tweeter and midrange assembly of my speaker is designed to absorb (rather than reflect) the rearward radiation from behind the diaphragms. Since sound is nothing more than vibration reflected at certain frequencies, isolation is very important to avoid unwanted distortion/coloration.

Ok, so you aren't really interested in what makes a good speaker, you just need to know if you can get something good for under $150.00 (about 100 British Pounds.)
Long story short, your best bet will be a 2.1 set of powered PC speakers. As long as you have a headphone jack to plug them into it is simple as pie.
Look at the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's, or the logitec Z-2300's or any of their competition.
The movies you mention are poorly mixed audio wise (but you know that already) so they will not sound great on any speaker. But for your budget this is about your only option, and they will still put tv speakers to shame.
Hope that helps.

Just hooked up my PC speakers, seems pretty good now. Would never have thought of that!

Thanks a bunch everyone
