What sort of budget are you thinking of? The Sennheiser 650 is pretty good by all accounts, or you can go nuts and get a pair of Stax earspeakers!

Whether you *need* a headphone amp depends on your amp, but an amp will most likely give you better results than whatever comes built into your receiver.

The Audio Technica AD 700's received an A rating in Stereophile not long ago. I saw them on Amazon for like 90 bucks. I don't use headphones, so I can't tell you how good they are.

Default Consider Grados

I have Grado SR-80's, which are a great $100 headphone.

See http://goodcans.com/ for more options.

You could also consider beyerdynamic DT 440 or AKG K240 MKII.

Part of your choice will depend on whether you want an open or sealed design. I love my Grado's, but thiere not much isolation from ambient noise and there's a lot of leakage.

I'm thinking about a pair of Denon AH-D2000's (~ $250) after the holidays. I picked up my son a pair of Sennheiser 202 Pro's ($21) so he can use it with his Yamaha keyboard, or iPod mixing machine (U-Create) the grandparents got him for Christmas.

i was thinking no more than 200 or 250 max. also the kids is what got me to thinking about this so i need to have as much isolation i can get from outside noise. i was looking at some grado phones in a couple of my catalogs. just havent had any experience with headphones for many years. was going to go for it after the holidays myself. getting an oppo player first
