They also had all of the sets made for the film. It was later discovered that they were all destroyed, which devastated Aronofsky. Thankfully, he still managed to make The Fountain at a later time and it was literally perfect!

And yes, the soundtrack is amazing. I still listen to certain songs weekly.

Not to mention, the budget was cut in half the second time around, and he was forced to make decisions like shooting the spaceship scenes with macro photography rather than CGI. The result is much more beautiful, in my opinion.

Thumbs up Czar

I am pleased that you gave it a try, and doubley pleased that you made it all the way through.

Just the fact that you didnt turn it off proves that Aronofsky succeeded.

Even though you didnt understand it, you were affected.

I didnt understand it the first time I saw it, but I didnt care at all. I felt like I had experienced something special....what that was, I wasnt sure. It was just a beautifull, aching, mesmerizing magnet that sucked me in. Wait a while....and watch it again. You will trip out on your second viewing.

Hugh Jackman = RANGE!!!

[Show spoiler] only the present and future tom are real. the past tom is the conquisidor referenced in the book (who we see at beginning of the film). the past tom isn't real, just a character in the book.

as Q said, the present Tom was constantly trying to cure/fight/resist his wife's death, by trying to develop cures, etc. she died, hence he failed. at her funeral, he still says that "death is a disease", hence hasn't accepted death. he planted a tree at her grave. his wife talked about how (dont recall who) someone, after they died, became part of the plants/soil/etc.

at this point: how did present tom age 500 years to about the year 2600? i dont know if the movie spells this out, but i presume he just kept working in the lab and conjured up an anti-aging cure (the green mix he was eating in the spaceship). the tree thats in the spaceship supposedly represents his wife, and i think that is the tree he planted at her grave (and hence that she was absorbed into).

in the spaceship: we see future tom struggling to still finish the book. then it seems that he thinks back to changing a choice he made, and go for a walk with his wife, instead of going to the lab to fight death. this seems to be a cruicial realiziation for him in the future, as it shows he is starting to let go of the fighting/resisting of death. as he continues to do this, he was able to finish teh last chapter of the book (in his head, in the future), where he appeared to the mayan warrior in the buddha-posture, and not fighting/resisting any violence against him. hence, he was identified as the one and permitted to teh tree of life (i guess b/c he didnt resist any attempts to kill/strike him), and at the tree of life he fed off, he didnt die but was merely redistributed/reborn (as his wife said) through death. all of this "past tom" realization is mental writing of the last chapter by the future tom, who then completes "the book" and his soul is free to shoot through the mayan star (as i guess his wife said: this is where souls go to be reborn?!)

As always, insightful and thoughtful, even if I subscribe to a different analytical viewpoint. I've come to rely on your thoughts on films.

Ashamedly, I JUST got the blu-ray this week and haven't watched it yet, so I have no idea. I have it on my other computer though--not too sure where I originally got it from.

In addition to the great story open to philosophical interpretation, it's easy to forget that this film is also a visual wonder.

I agree, obviously you and I have talked about it before. Aronofsky purposesly avoided special effects for the future scenes, opting for chemical reactions under a microscope to achieve a "timeless" feel to it. I can't tell you the number of ppl that don't know that!

I completely agree. I own the soundtrack and had it in my car for 2 months straight.

I agree in that it is almost unbearably sad. However, I've begun to subscribe to surfdude's thoughts that it is also very uplifting at the end, if you understand it (note: I don't mean accepting my analysis of the film, but rather understanding thematically what is in place).

The Fountain is one of my favorite movies. I have watched it countless times - always trying to keep an open mind about it's meaning and I always take away a little something new from it. I even love the making-of feature which talks about the roller coaster ride making the movie was, how they made some shots, and you get some insight into its meaning. Aside from the visuals, the soundtrack is one of the best in a movie, sometimes I have put on the movie more to hear the music. Very glad the OP re-kindled my feelings towards this movie. Also to the OP watch it again!

Agreed, you and I have also talked about it before. I would love to watch it at your place with your incredible ceiling fixture/skylight.

They were, with a budget upwards of $100 mill, which was supposed to film in Australia. They actually started creating the sets before there was a dispute between Pitt and Aronofsky, ending those plans. I personally think Jackman and Weisz are much better suited for the material, even though Pitt and Blanchett are great, because those two are far better at conveying emotion imo.

Btw, the original plan was for a huge Mayan battle.

It's not. It was on his website for a good while, but if you go there and click the link now, it says Not Found. Not sure if there's anywhere to get it from now.

It's kind of neat to see that Aronofsky's range is wide as well. I like that he doesnt do cookie cutter flicks.
