Default Your Top Movies of 2009

Well now it's time for the list that actually matters and what people really give a shit about... The top 20 movie list. I had so much fun coming up with this list because there hasn't been this many good films in one year in a long long time!! It was the year of blue. Blue penis, blue boobs, blu-ray and back to directors making blue style films (not Burton Blue ). It felt good again to be a film fan. I look foreword to the comments (especially the questions about how Avatar made it on the list as high it did with the review I gave it earlier). But I'll let you guys take a look. I look foreword to all of your lists.

Robert's Top 20 Motion Pictures of 2009:

1. Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino)
2. My Suicide (David Lee Miller)
3. Nine (Rob Marshall)
4. Antichrist (Lars Von Trier)
5. A Single Man (Tom Ford)
6. Up In The Air (Jason Reitman)
7. Up (Pete Docter)
8. (500) Days of Summer (Marc Webb)
9. Watchmen (Zack Snyder)
10. The White Ribbon (Michael Haneke)
11. An Education (Lone Scherfig)
12. Public Enemies (Michael Mann)
13. Drag Me To Hell (Sam Raimi)
14. Avatar (James Cameron)
15. Observe and Report (Jody Hill)
16. Where The Wild Things Are (Spike Jonze)
17. The Hurt Locker (Katherine Bigelow)
18. The Hangover (Todd Phillips)
19. Black Dynamite (Scott Sanders)
20. Tetro (Francis Ford Coppola)

Worthy Mentions:

-Moon (Duncan Jones)
-Fanboys (Kyle Newman)
-Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (Yoshihiro Nishimura and Naoyuki Tomomatsu)

Inglorious not best of 2009!

Moon more than honorable mention!

Observe and Report should not be on any top list EVER!

And the above bolded titles are not top 20, the other films on the list I can go for but not those

I could go on all day about Inglourious but i'm just going to save my breath. It's cinematic brilliance; but to each his own.

Moon lost some value the second time I saw it. Maybe a third will rekindle the love, but until then honorable mention.

OaR You just didn't get it. It was great. It's what more comedies need to strive for.

Did you see Drag Me To Hell?? Fantastic!!
Avatar... I don't want to get into this. Look for my post in the review thread for it. It will explain more. On the list more because of what its going to do for effects and 3D.
Enemies is great filmmaking. Michael Mann has acheived another great film here, that isn't getting the respect it deserves.
You didn't like Watchmen?? Why?? For being the closest adaptation EVER! it easily makes my list.

I was expecting a Top 10 thread to pop up soon and you show up with a Top 20 instead

I wouldn't be able to finalize my list until I see Avatar, Sherlock Holmes and The Road (won't get to see this one until home video).

I've also heard great stuff about Moon, so I'm interested in checking that one out.

Edit: Up In The Air as well, based on the trailers I've seen it looks pretty good.

OaR may be funny but it isnt top 20 of 2009, you dont have a single foreign or small release or independent film on there...

Drag me to hell was good for a Horror movie, not good to great in general
Avatar is just another blockbuster where people think that beacuse it has cool effects or awesome 3d that makes it a great movie

Enemies was slow, had too many gangster movies cliches in it for me and just didnt seem very original and I ddint think Christian Bale was very good in it..

Just because watchmen was the closest adaptation yet doesnt make it a great movie to be on top 20 of 2009, but it is an opinion list

Yesterday at 6:04pm I had seen every major film that needed to be seen in 09'. So I'm one of the only people at this point who can actually make a detailed and informative list. I thought I would get on it right away.

For what we were expecting the film to be it was a let down at first. But after a few re-watchings the film has merit. The cinematography and Marion Cotillard's performance shine here. I will agree if I had only seen this film once it would not even have made the list, but after rewatching and letting it sink in it is a film worth mentioning. I don't think this is Mann's best film by a long shot but it is still a solid film.

I've read so much good about that film and it looked fantastic from the trailers. Just the look of the visual look of the film had me interested. Due to the limited release it will be quite some time before I get to see it unfortunately

My preliminary Top 10 favorites (just had to bold that to clarify it for the people who will dissect my list and say that my choices aren't valid and that I don't watch enough types of movies ) so far this year would be (in no particular order):

Star Trek
Taken
Terminator Salvation
Whiteout (Yes, that Whiteout)
Up
Fast&Furious
Knowing
State of Play
Transformers 2
Wolverine

I think I've only seen about 20 movies this year, so a Top 20 list would include even the movies I didn't like such as The Haunting in Connecticut. I didn't like that one at all!

The ones I suspect will have a place on that list after seeing them would be Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, The Road and maybe 9 (it didn't come to my theater).

Should each of those make the cut then Transformers 2, Wolverine, Fast&Furious and Knowing would be the ones I'd drop.

As for Public Enemies, I thought the film was passable. I saw it at midnight and liked it, but not enough to buy it or anything. I think I gave it a B- after seeing it if I remember correctly. Depp did a great job.

5. Ok great film!! It was on my long list but just got cut out when I was cutting the list down. Everyone should check it out though!!
6. I found the film flat and lacking cinematic excellence. Also seen in 08!
10. This was a letdown for me. I was expecting something more from Bobcat Goldthwait
11. Peter Gallagher was the best thing about this film. (500) was better.
13. The baseball movie?? Really?? Blind Side was better and I didn't like Blind Side. Also came out last year.
