Default Intel 2.4 ghz quad core or 3.0 ghz dual core

I am building a PC for a friend and he decided he wanted it Blu Ray capable.

Phillips SPD700 Blu Ray burner
nVidia 8800 gts 640mb
Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard
Intel 1.86 core 2 duo
2gb ram

Cyberlink advisor says the processor is too slow. When I play a blu ray it maxes the CPU out and stutters unusable.

I was going to get a quad 2.4 ghz, but another friend recommended a 3.0 ghz dual core.

I don’t know which would give better performance.

Thanks for any advice,
-Jeff

3.0ghz dual core is good for gaming and quad is good for running multiple applications.

Im pretty sure there isnt a single program available optimized for quad core. The vast majority of programs arent even optimized for dual core. Get the 3.0ghz dual core.

Surprising, the processor that is currently in use sounds like it would work great.

A quad core is MUCH faster than a dual-core, but a 3.0 dual core would work for a BD burner.

Unless cyber link is designed for multi-core (not sure if it is) then 3.0 will be better. If it does take advantage of multiple cores, you will be better off with quad core.

Default I thought the dual 1.8 cpu would work

but the Cyberlink player barely plays and the cyberlink bluray advisor gives the cpu a red flag

Also consider the speed of the front side bus and use faster DDR2 (800MHz).

If you ask me, I would say 3.0 dual core. Small number of application can make full use of quad core as of now (except you plan to run different programmes simultaneoursly)

owning a dual core gateway 3.0ghz fx series and a custom companys core 2 quad QX6800 2.93ghz our quad litterally destroys the dual core in performance... id go with quad but a 3.0ghz can still get most any job done either way you'll have a nice set up...dont get a 1.6ghz laptop

i recently had the same dilemma. i picked up Q6600. it isn't true there're no applications that use all 4 cores - one very important, nero recode, use it for sure, and h264 recoding is extremely fast!... as well as some HD players. it is, in my opinion, future proof chioce, since it'll get better with time passing with numerous multicore optimizations in the future. although dual core 3.0 is remarkable cpu, i would go for qouad, definitely. u will lose some framerates (but really little) in today's games, but u'll get them back ond even more very soon...
btw some games already support multicore cpus (UT3 surely will).

btw for any of U that still don't know, there's extremely cheap solution to play 1080p blu-rays even on a slower and older cpu, like athlon 3000+ or p4 2.8 ghz...
i put it in may SFF with quad cpu just for that (i firstly decide to stick with integrated intel x3000, since i use PS3 for gaming, of course, but then saw that it doesn't work well with HD content inspite of little cpu utilization, i.e. optimization in drivers are screwed up)...
it is ati HD 2400pro card, low profile. forget serious gaming with new games, but HD content and Vista aero shine on it! it is of course hdcp, and has a hdmi port also...

yes, i bought mine for 700$ a long time ago, but today i have a PS3 for gaming
this is SFF chasis, it is a must have for my systems, and this 60$ card is HD king for almost no extra cost and zero power consumption...

We just got a quad core at my job a couple of weeks ago for cad. I spec'ed the machine, they ordered, and I set it up for the job. That thing must boot in 30 seconds flat, or less.

Doesn't matter if the app supports it, it runs faster than HD DVD to the clearance bin.
