I just thought of what would be a good idea to actually put good use of BD Live, instead of chat services, trailers, or something I won't use. I thought about the commentaries featured in the Strong bad and Homestar Runner DVDs, since the Sbemails are short, and the Chaps could be varied with their commentaries, they could put up instant commentaries for some of the Sbemails, have all the 200 sbemails (upconvert) in one Blu ray disc and each sbemail can be checked for updates provided by them, also provide easy link to commentaries for different Sbemails, the original commentaries can remain in the disc, but have the new commentaries available via BD Live, since they should be just small audio files any way (about MP3 files), plus allow the newer sbemails downloadable via BD live (for free would be great) and provide commentaries. Then I'm sold on BD Live, any thoughts.
(Shoot, I didn't realize that I misspelled Could) :/. |

Paramount and Dreamworks actually used BD-Live to add extras to releases:
Transformers '07 got an additional 20+ mins of new extras in time for Revenge of the Fallen's theatrical release. Kung Fu Panda offered a limited time featurette to store and view on the player itself. Now Sony is offering MovieIQ which is a trivia track that is updated constantly and presented in real-time. Dreamworks did attempt this with the HD DVD for Shrek The Third where the trivia track was supposed to be updated often via the HD DVD internet connection. Commentaries could be a good idea, however, these can not be small files since the best way to provide them is Dolby Digital and that still takes up quite a bit of space. MP3/MP4 is not an audio option for Blu-ray Discs, the audio has to be either PCM, DD, or DTS. |

I really liked that Shaolin Temple feature on the Kung Fu Panda BD. Too bad they didn't keep that one. It was both educational and entertaining.
I have not used BD-Live in months, except to demonstrate it for friends. Meaningful content and featurettes are the key. Forcing people to "register" and "log in" using the "keyboard" displayed on the TV makes that option much too large of a chore. For the record, Homestar Runner and the SB Emails RULE! ![]() Here's an example of one of my favorite SB Emails: 50 Emails |

With a couple of exceptions, BD-Live has been a miserable failure and not lived up to expectations. Requiring separate log-ins for each studio was a horrible idea. Sony's new MovieIQ feature does look promising, but we will see how well supported it is in the future.
