Default Issue with BD input switchover on TV

Hi all-

I have a Sony XBR9 52" and the fabled, rarely-functioning Samsung 1200 BD player. The latest issue (which I'm hoping to blame on the BD player) is that when I insert a new disc (BD or DVD), the video input rarely comes up on screen. It takes a rain-dance like ceremony of ejecting the disc, switching inputs, powering on and off the player in order to coax the image onto the screen. It's ridiculous. And even then, it takes a while for the image to come up on screen.

I'm hooked up through HDMI directly into the TV (sound separately wired into Yamaha 4000 soundbar, which comes on immediately of course).

Does anyone have an idea as to the reason for this? I've turned off the TV's HDMI control for my peripherals, thinking that was the issue. But it wasn't. Same sh!t.

Help appreciated.
