I'm sorry, but some of you might not like the sound of "Toshiba", but I recommend it. Toshiba 100GB MK1032GAX (5400rpm)
I use it for my laptop, and satisfied with it

You either get the Xecuter HDD Xtender (you won't be able to put the PS3 in the upright position) or get a female-male eSATA cable, then plug an external 3.5" HDD casing to it. You can easily and cheaply boost your capacity to 500GB.

I have a Hitachi 160GB. I'm happy with it. I have about 56GB left (my 100+ Bleach episodes had a good deal to do with that).

I've been wanting to do this also but I thought I'd have to re-download all the PSN games, demos, etc. The guide in the link mostly deals with the hardware aspect of the upgrade but the comments that follow seem to indicate that using the backup command on the PS3 takes care of almost everything (if not everything). Some said they connected an external drive, used the backup function, and then just restored the backup once the new drive had been installed. They make it seem pretty painless so I guess I'll give this a shot as well.

If I don’t have an external HD to transfer my PSN games for the transfer will I loose them? Or will the PSN allow me to re-download them for free?

Back up onto an external HDD connected via the USB port. You can use a HDD bigger than your current HDD provided that it is FAT32 formatted. Using this, I don't think you need to redownload all of your demos/PSN-buys, with the exception of Warhawk I think.
