Default LOST Season "5" really grainy

I had been waiting for season 5 for a while and finally got it. I watched 5 episodes yesterday and noticed it was “grainy.” Just had replaced my old Samsung 52 inch (15,000:1 contrast) with another Samsung 52 inch (80,000:1 contrast) and noticed the graininess while watching season 5. Then I went back to watch the last episode from season 4 and noticed it too was very grainy. "Wonder why I didn't catch that before," a question I asked myself. Anyway, anyone else think season 5 or any other season is grainy too?

There was a lot of hype that went into this series. I remember watching some of the extras and there was mentioning of a lot of improvements were included in season 3 and more improvements coming to season 4 and 5. Hmm... makes me wonder, because --- they can add all the bells and whistles they want, but unless they get rid of the graininess, it ain't worth a “doodlely-squat” if the quality of the picture ain't there. Also, season 5 is in DTS-HD too; could have fooled me. Didn't sound like it to me. I even cleaned out the wax in my ears just to make sure (just kidding, I cleaned out the wax the night before).

Bottom line: I don't think Disney/Buena Vista has put too much effort to making the seasons in blu ray quality. Watching these disks makes me think that I am watching 1080 upscale from a DVD format version. Don't get me wrong, I love the story behind "LOST", but...

Final thoughts: There will be a lot of you out there that will disagree with me, but that’s my two cents worth. Just telling it like it is. By watching the latest season released, I expected to have my socks knocked off. I looked down at my feet; the socks were still there. If I were to rate season 5, I would give it a 3 star rating for mediocre PQ and a 3 star rating for audio (where in the hell is the DTS-HD, Disney? And get rid of the graininess… looks like flying rice!)

is your tv calibrated correctly? and grain isnt necessarily a bad thing depending... I have season 3 and 4 on bluray and they look great... and no offense but i dont think you should be making fun of the DTS-HDMA when your running Bose equipment..

Fun stuff.

Disney is possibly the best studio regarding AQ/PQ (excluding one obvious exception).

Actually the OP is not entirely wrong I noticed it as well there is a lot more grain in Season 5 than in previous seasons, especially during indoor scenes. The island shots and other outdoor scenes look incredible as always though.

Maybe the Sharpness setting on your TV needs to be turned down? Just a random guess, I thought Lost was one of the best TV series-to-bluray disc sets out there...excellent PQ and AQ all-around (however, I have not yet watched Season 5, it is in the mail and I should get it soon).

Two things:

1. Yes, it's grainy. It keeps the grain fully intact.
2. It looks amazing.

It just shows you how crappy you're old display was and how good the new one is. Lost always have been grainy even in daylight. It's so much better than the DVD, that DVD look like Youtube HQ video... LOL!

Yea you might not of found your truly prefered tv settings yet, samsungs 80,000:1 contrast ratio means ur tv can produce 80,000 diff colors at extreme settings, but not on screen at the same time, so not every setting is as great as can be- same with every tv out there

I was under the impression that Lost was shot with HD cameras and not on film.

I guess I was wrong. I'm glad they kept the grain intact.

I <3 grain.

I find you get a lot more detail from the picture with grain.

ENJOY!

I read on a forum a while back that the first few seasons were film, then they switched to HD video. However, imdb says it's 35mm film without any mention of a change to video. I don't know if imdb is correct and/or up-to-date.

Shows shot on HD cameras almost always have artificial grain added to them via FilmLook or some other plugin like that. The raw footage looks like something from the evening news before they do that

For some reason the first 5 or so eps look like that (I'm guessing a stylistic choice) and then things clear up.

Audio codecs do not a mix, nor a sound capture make, and there isn't time to ADR every piece of errant dialog on a TV production schedule. Often times the actors are in the booth less than 24 hours before it goes to air

Get a new TV, yours seems to be broken. Season 5 looks fantastic. Grainy it ain't, except for some dark scenes where that's to be expected.
