France Could You Suggest Some French Films...

Hey guys,

I am fairly n00bish to the French cinema scene but after seeing 36 Quai des Orfčvres (2004), Astérix et les Vikings (2006), Largo Winch (2008), Les femmes de l'ombre (2008) and MR 73 (2008) I have come to like it very much and I was wondering if there are other films that I may like that are along the same lines as the previous so in the genres of Action, Crime, Thriller. I suppose Drama and Comedy are in there as well.

I have been considering Caché (2005) and Mesrine: L'instinct de mort/L'ennemi public n° 1 (2008) although with Mesrine I am not sure of but I heard it is good

So are there any French films (preferably on Blu) that anyone thinks I could be interested in?

ML

On a side note does anyone know if the transfers of Les femmes de l'ombre (2008) are the same for both French and English Blu's? (minus English subtitles of course).

when you say "French" films are you meaning modern French films available specifically on bd or French films in general from all years?
Here are some on bd that aren't restricted to crime thriller that all have English subs unless noted
"Cache" (UK)
"Chrysalis" (France)(policier)
"le Mepris" (Contempt) (UK;France)(coming soon to US)(art-house)
"Belle de Jour" (France; UK)(locked)(art-house)
"Tell No One" (English title) (available in US now)(thriller)
"The Red Balloon" (coming to UK)(classic children's)
"(L)'ennemi Intime" (France)(war film)
"la Mome" (available in US now)(musical; biography)
"The Science of Sleep" (france) (no English subs)
"A Very Long Engagement" (France)(locked)(fantasy)
"Amelie" (Australia bd has English subs)(fantasy)

if you like the thriller type you definitely need to get "Tell No One".
It is excellent.
"Chrysalis" is another available through amazon.fr that is a modern police drama that you would probably like.

I don't just want modern ones but old as well but I'd like it if they had a blu-ray release

Chrysalis and Tell No One look to be worth a watch

yeah the ones I have listed are a good selection of the best French language import blu-rays that have come out so far.
I have all of them except the one that hasn't come out yet.
French films are my favorite of all the foreign language options, and I have actively kept up with the releases that have English subs that are worth getting.
there are a bunch of seminal French classics coming next year like "The Grand Illusion" and "The Obscure Object of Desire"
also: make sure to check out the Criterion bd "Wages of Fear"
that is a supreme French classic also.
also out on Criterion: "The last Metro", "Playtime", "The 400 Blows", and "Pierrot le Fou"
anyway: that should get you started for sure.

I literally have to run in a few minutes...so I would respond later, in-depth, but you probably want to look at La Haine (French version, not UK), and Criterion's The Wages of Fear.

Also, aside from A. Zulawski, Leos Carax is one of my top favorite directors, and his short here:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Tokyo-Blu-ray/4253/

...I thought was exceptional. (If you could play PAL DVDs, I would also recommend getting his Lovers on the Bridge from the UK).

More later

Léon and Nikita are two very enjoyable action movies from Luc Besson. They have been recently released in BR (I saw them on amazon.co.uk).

i didn't realise Léon was a French film thought it was US made as it was all English lol.

La Haine looks really quite good, The Last Metro sounds great and OSS 117 looks like it will be a laugh

It's like The Fifth Element, shot in english by a french director (still Luc Besson).

La Haine is pretty famous indeed. You could check Irreversible by Gaspard Noe, a pretty decent film known for his infamous rape scene (barely bearable), starring Monica Belluci and Vincent Cassel (who plays Mesrine). With these two actors there's another "okay" action movie called Dobermann. Unfortunately both of these movies haven't been released in Blu Ray yet.

One of my favorite french directed movie is in english but you probably saw it : Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind by Michel Gondry.

I'd say for a movie to be a French movie it needs to be in French.
kinda goes without saying.
many foreign directors have made English language movies, but people don't generally refer to these as "French" films.
just like nobody calls "The Big Heat" an Austrian film even though its director--Fritz lang-- was born in Austria.

Le dīner de cons is a great classic comedy.
La grande vadrouille as well.
I don't know if either has subtitles though.

Which is cheap on Amazon.fr right now (9.99€). And according to EcranLarge.com, there's only the French audio track, that's it.

Ecranlarge are wrong (optional English and French SDH subs are also available):

La grande vadrouille is not English-friendly.

I see Ne Le Dis A Personne (Tell No One) was mentioned, the French disc is the one to get.

Le Pacte des Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf) is an entertaining film, and I thoroughly recommend Indegenes (Days of Glory). As others have mentioned, Nikita is a good choice. Irreversible is a film you should see, but I warn you now; it's not pleasant. Likewise, another unpleasant film, but nevertheless worth seeing is Man Bites Dog - it's a Belgian film but in French.

Edit: I don't believe Irreversible and Man Bites Dog are available on Blu-ray.
