Default Not playing in 1080p?

Hello,

I have been noticing lately that when i load up a game (for example assassin's creed II, a message pops up saying 1080, but as soon as the game gets to the first screen, another message pops up sayin 720 again. I'm wondering if there is another setting/option I'm missing, because i know this game fully supports 1080p. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

good question

i know multi port games are only 720p on the ps3 & 360
you could force the game to 1080p by only selecting 1080p on the ps3 menu (same for 360) but why ever play a game on a NON native resolution?

ps3 only games are usually ran @ 1080p native resolution

Most Playstation 3 games do not run on 1080p resolution, most are in 720p, in fact the reason many games feature the support of 1080p is that older HDTVs lack 720p support and 1080i is the olny functional resolution on the set. However, you wont tell the difference between the resolutions, whether it's scaled or native, especially if your display is already a 1080p set. The scaling on your television set however would be more of the reason to play the game in 1080p. Some 1080p sets tend to do poorly when upscaling 480p or 720p signals (even deinterlacing 1080i), which is when you want to play in 1080p. If the 720p signal is functioning normally on a 1080p set, at far or normal seating distances and smaller televisions, there should be no visible difference.

I seriously doubt the game supports an internal resolution of 1080p. But, it likely supports upscaling to an external resolution of 1080p, which is usually what the "1080p" icon on the back of the box means.

Typically on PS3 you have to force this buy choosing only 1080p in the PS3's configuration.

There's games like SOCOM that actually say 1080p on the back, as in...it's supported, yet the res you get is 1080i. You have to force it, as has been said, but when I did this for Confrontation, it looked a lot worse. Native = Best.

as said by the above most games DO NOT run 1080p.. when u see it pop up 1080p that just means that into screen is in 1080p and then the game returns to 720p which is its native resolution... itll run smoother in 720p versus u trying to force it to 1080p cause u think 1080p means something

I bought a 1080i 65 inch projection in Atlanta around 2004 and used that until the HDMI port went bad on it around September. I picked up a 1080p 55 inch LCD Sony and every game looked crisp and upgraded. It was like I was playing all of my games for the first time. I have my PS3 set to 1080p.

Wipe out, Gran Turismo 5, Gran Tursimo prologue, Lair, NBA, all psn games, and a ton of other games say Hi!

There are plenty games that run "native" 1080i/p on Ps3, you must be thinking of the 360 or the wii. Last I checked the ps3 also runs movies at that resolution as well (I know this has nothing to do with games).

This link shows that the ps3 "can" output games at native 1080p:
http://www.webtechpoint.com/video-game-consoles/

"The RSX can easily output resolutions of up to 1080p; but an important feature is its upscaling ability. The chip was ready quickly, running at a core clock of 550 MHz and utilizing 256 MB of video memory. Nivdia and Sony often touted the power of the RSX by saying it was more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra graphics cards combined."

Default Shimmer

I'm running a PS3 through a 1080P Panny Plasma. I've noticed that a few games, notably Burnout and Uncharted 2, show some jaggies and shimmer on occasion. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they are 720 (?).

Sure it can do games at 1080p, but fact is, without lots of TLC and optomization to the graphics engine, most games would require a significat visual hit to run at 1080p smoothly. There are very few full fledged PS3 titles that run in a true 1080p. Most PSN games do it because they are typically using much much simpler graphics engines.

I need KZ3! The stealth with no moving was probably the best perk I've ever seen in a game. I loved running around the corner after killing someone stopping and having 3 guys go by

I think what you are trying to say is that its possible to make games so detailed and graphically intensive that they're even limited somewhat at 720p?

yes, this is true. As the shader demands increase, it will become harder and harder for these old graphics cards to keep up. Uncharted 2 really isn't even a technological marvel compared to what modern graphics cards can do. But the game is backed by stellar art direction and excellent assets for use in the engine, so the end result looks great.

with smart assets and art direction, you can pull it all together and make a great looking game. The latest Ratchet and Clank game runs at 60fps in 720p. Looks nearly as good as some animated movies.

I know WipeOut is 1080p but is it running at 30fps or 60fps? I can't tell because its so fast.

Anyone who has a newer tv and wants to see a games true native resolution just go to the menu --> screen mode --> then select the "full pixel" setting. If its a 720p game the screen area will shrink (Burnout Paradise) and if its 1080p game the view area will get bigger (GT Prologue or Cross Media Bar on PS3).

PS3 games are rendered at a wide variety of resolutions between full HD 1920x1080 and sub HD 960x540 (depending on how demanding the game is graphically and how good are the developers) and then the PS3 scaler sets the video output to a set resolution depending on what your tv supports and what you have selected in the options menu.

The only way to know a game's true resolution is to count the pixels, which is what they have been doing at Beyond3d. Pretty interesting stuff if anyone wants to check it out.

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241

Also remember that the Cell can assist the RSX with rendering graphics. So even though the GPU is a couple generations behind, PS3 exclusives will continue to impress.

Wipeout HD is 1920x1080 60fps, most of the time. However, it can drop to 1280x1080 60fps in certain situations. The funny thing is, the only game locked in to 1920x1080 60fps this gen is Ridge Racer 7, a PS3 lauch game.

I personally like to let my PS3 do the upscaling, because it tends to do a better job than the TV.
I for once used to have a 1080p LCD, and all the *i* resolutions looked terrible, and 720p looked a bit soft. That's why I set the PS3 to upscale, so the TV stayed in 1080p, which was the only resolution that looked good. However, I have a new 1080p plasma and it does a FANTASTIC job with both 1080i and 720p. I still keep the PS3 to upscale, it just does a great job at it.
