Bracke has both reviews up at hidefdigest.com.
Spidey 3: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1042/spiderman3.html TF: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/1110/transformers.html You can see that he basically gave both the same review: Movie - 3.0; PQ - 4.5; AQ 5.0. The notable gaffe is that Spidey has both True HD & uncompressed PCM while TF has neither. He even stresses that he was disappointed that they neglected to give TF a hi-res audio treatment. Really doesn't make sense to give it 5 stars then does it? A lot of people on here attack Bracke and I've defended him at times saying that he isn't as biased as people say. Well this really gets under my skin. He just couldn't accept that Spidey 3 DOES have a better AQ than TF. He couldn't let the truth go w/o skewing it a little. i generally like bracke's reviews, but the disparity here does seem very weird.
if you're happy enough with the DTS 1.5 audio to give it 5 stars, then why bother mentioning that there is no lossless audio? you're obviously not COMPLETELY happy (which is what i define a 5 star as). |

I think Bracke lets his personal tastes of the films themselves affect his scoring for the technical categories. I use his reviews mostly to see the specs and nothing else. A lossy soundtrack should never get a perfect score, only the original studio master soundtrack in lossless form should get that score. What he is rating is the audio mix and how well the audio was designed and he should make that clear.

I once said on this forum that I couldn't find hd dvd bias on the part of highdefdigest.com I have since concluded that I was wrong.
Peter Bracke in the past has given a poor rating on blu-rays in regards to included extra features. Generally if there are any extra features he gives some sort of rating that ends up pulling the total average down. With Spiderman 3 he doesn't give any rating to the extra features, I assume because he doesn't want it to raise the overall rating and b/c he doesn't want to admit that blu-ray is now giving us what he has been touting for so long as hd dvd superiority. |

I just went to the site to see if it got reviewed earlier. I was curious as to what rating it would get for audio after it was revealed it would have a lossy soundtrack. I'm sure it will sound OK but to give it 5 stars when you know there are way better audio formats available is just plain retarded. Give this guy some Q-tips and brain.

Five stars is like being the little fat kid in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when he falls in the chocolate river.
Anything less isn't five stars. |

Surprisingly, the human ear cannot detect a lot of the subtleties buries in the highest audio qualities. Transformers probably didn't need that much AQ. It is just big robots smashing into one another for 2 hours or so. Not much subtle about that.
Spiderman 3 however requires more depth, as the movie is more of a buffet of different genera's rolled into one. Better sound design from the get-go. It is possible Transformers wouldn't have benefited from more audio depth. I've listened to plenty of DTS Audio that was indistinguishable from Dolby True HD. Sometimes it is just superfluous. If Transformers wasn't originally made with a very diverse sound scape, it wouldn't need the space of a lossless track. You wouldn't gain anything. The audio on the HD DVD may be as good as it gets, even by a professionaly trained ear. Or maybe he just couldn't tell the difference. |

You guys should just accept the Hi Def Digest is biased, some of their titles that received 5 star PQ are a lot worse than any of the spiderman trilogy
Forget HDD, Sony did a stellar job, PQ & SQ are without a doubt 5 star in my book, as for the movies, a 3,5/4 is reasonable, good movies visually but come up a bit short |
