Default Yamaha YHT-391 sytem

Just hooked this system up for my sister and my first impression is, I do not like it at all. The receiver (HTR-6230) used with this system is a joke. No audio pass through via HDMI, c'mon. Then they only give you two optical In's. One is for the DTV/CBL and the other is for CD. Nothing for a DVD/BLU at all. I had to connect the L/R audio out from the blu-ray to L/R audio in on the receiver. Yamaha really fell short on this receiver. I do love my 663 and the only thing close between the two is the word "Yamaha". Anyone interested in this, for the money it's a 4 out of 10 in my eye's and would save a little more and step up to something else.

The site shows the HTR-6230 having a digital coax input. It will be color coded either orange or black. You can hook the blu ray player to that. If the blu ray doesn't have a coax output, use the optical in place of the cd player. Unless she has a lot of dts cds to play, the red & white analog connections will work just as good for cds. Or, if it's a digital cable box, chances are it has a digital coax output. Switch the optical for the CBL, with the coax for the blu ray. There's ways around your problem.

It shows this on the receiver's specs page: HDMI (In/Out)........(2 / 1) audio pass-thru.
So, it seems it will pass audio through to the tv.
If you're talking about HD audio from BD movies, or regular DD and DTS over HDMI, you need a receiver with "HDMI v1.3 repeater" feature. Cheaper HTIBs usually don't do this. I think people expect too much from cheap gear. Cheap gear is to get you into the hobby, then you upgrade as funds allow. That's the nice thing about HTIBs that give you a real receiver, instead of those with built-in dvd players. They're upgradable.

I had a HTR-5940 Yamaha receiver, before my Onkyo. It didn't have any HDMI at all. But for regular DD and DTS, it was a very nice receiver. I'm sure your sister will enjoy hers. My wife's brother-in-law is still enjoying my old Yamaha.

It tells in the receivers manual that HDMI won't pass through audio. I will have to try the digital coax out.

It's true...I was lied to at Best Buy and they told me it COULD pass with HDMI and so I bought it. Well, it DOESN'T pass with HDMI. I ended up hooking the video up with HDMI and the audio with an optical cable. I hated that receiver and the speakers, so I sold it.
I just bought a Denon 1910 with a MartinLogan Encore TF center speaker and am being given Energy bookshelf front speakers and Energy subwoofer.
Audio AND video run through HDMI and it supports all the new codecs.
EVERYONE, DON'T BUY THE YAMAHA 6230, IT'S A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!

I recently purchased this yamaha HTiB, i do enjoy it, i know it doesnt decoee audi via hdmi, i know it doesnt decode trueHD or DTSHD-Ma. but i still enjoy the unit overall, its perfect for what my needs are at this time, but i do have one question. I'm not sure iof this is normal or not, but i have noticed at nihght when i am unable to have th esubwoofer on due to my 4 year old being sund asleep in the next room, my overall audio is much louder. like i can set it at -30db and hear the speakers fine, but if at other times i am able to have have the subwoofer on, that same movie i was jjst listening at -30db i know have to have at -15 for it to be as load. is this normal? does the subwoofer take from the overall db level, or is there possbily smoeting wrong with my system?

Thanks
