Default Is there a thread anywhere as to why all of us collect Blu-rays?

Personally, I like knowing that when I look at my collection that these are the definitive versions that are available. Even if the PQ of the video is just slightly better than the DVD, it is still the best. I've recently been comparing Laserdisc versions of the movies I own on Blu-ray and the differences are astounding. I know that is like comparing apples to oranges but it shows that we have come a long way to really enjoying movies the way they were meant to in our own homes. It's coming to the point where I am waiting for movies that I want to watch to be released on BD after they show at the theater because I want to watch the movie with my own setup for the first time...and not the blurry screen and amped up base that we get at the theater.

I just like collecting movies, I started collecting dvds a few years ago and when the blu transition happened I jumped on it as soon as I could afford to. I only buy movies I dont already own, I figure it in most cases only costs a few dollars more and you get the latest technology. The added quality is really just a bonus for me.

untill 2 years ago I bought movies which I have seen before and I rated 3 star out of 5 overal or if the movies shined in audio, visiuals etc..
now I buy movies I rate at least 4 stars out of 5 overal. For those I rate 5 stars I buy every available version and every release ( Laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, Hd-DVD, import versions, special edition, ultimate edition etc..) I also double dipped a lot of blu releases and will( stargate, no country for old man, terminator 2)

at the end I want to have a good size but collection of valuable movies(rare, oop, limited editions etc...) instead of 1000s of average movies.

I started buying dvd's 10 years ago to start a movie collection. I waited until 07 to upgrade to 1080p tv. That's when prices dropped to my price range. The only double dipping I do is if I believe it to be a important title or just can't pass up a $9.99 movie I REALLY like, a personal favorite. I don't plan on selling off my 600+dvd's, just buy more shelves as my Blu collection grows.

I would say I'm about the same, but I also have a deep appreciation for the crisp video and sound. Movies have come a long way (in terms of technology) in a very short amount of time.

For me, it was like this commercial I had saw for HD-DVD. This guy was a filmmaker and he wanted to watch movies the best way he could. That's how I feel about. I didn't care for the format war, I was for both sides, but in the end I went Blu.

i wouldnt go to the extend of saying I "collect" them but yeah, I buy those that I will definitely watch repeatedly. that means placing most of what I already own on DVD

no sense watching a movie u like on an inferior media when a better one is available at a reasonable price..

the logic is simple to me: DVD is like playing the xbox on component cables and Blu Ray is HDMI

but i only upgrade for movies with action scenes or special effects. shows like reservoir dogs and memento i still have them on DVD only

I do it for a few reasons:

1. It's the best technology available, gotta have it
2. After watching my first BD, I simply cannot go back to most DVD's. They almost make me gag at the lack of PQ on those suckers!
3. No one I know owns a BD player, so no one can come and borrow / touch / break / wreck / move my blus. Selfish, I know
4. I love film, it's my life, always has been. I was never an "outdoors kid", so I stayed inside and watched movies and TV shows. Still do, so I have a rather fond appreciation of buying films, and working on upgrading by DVD's to blus.
5. Everyone needs a hobby to keep sane. And my hobby is buyin' blus.

I've always been collecting DVDs ever since I was 15, and I've been upgrading certain ones with better editions to have the best quality and extras. So as Blu-Rays have been coming out, I've been getting BDs to either replace or compliment existing DVDs for their increased picture quality. I've also come to appreciate BDs for the following:

*Increased sound quality.
*Smaller shelf space.
*Better editions, more extras, exclusive extras, special interactive stuff, etc.
*Steelbooks! Digibooks! Other fancy collectable packaging!
*Different artwork (most of the time).

But ultimately, the number one reason I collect BDs is because I have a fanatical compulsary desire to. There is no rational or logical explanation for it; I just love movies and want to own them.

At least for me anyways, I have easily 600+ dvds as well, and I told myself the same thing that it would be only new releases, or my absolute favorite titles that I would double dip and get BDs of, however it has been extremely hard to keep to that goal. Especially after seeing and comparing BD quality with my DVD version, I am fairly positive I will end up replacing most of my collection, it just may take awhile.

In some ways, I am glad that all of the BDs I plan to purchase haven't been released yet, at least it gives me some extra time to save up and peddle the SD-DVD versions I have of them.

Well i got into dvds a long time ago but when blu's came out it just felt like it was time to shift to a new format like when VHS turned into DVD's. The only difference now when i cllect films is i collect films that are only personal favourites that i can rewatch over and over and also certain classics that i just want to watch once but own like some of the criterion films. It's also really nice to have a good selection of films people can watch when they come over

Here's my story,

I am a huge lover of film as well as being an independent filmmaker myself. I started collecting VHS when it wasn't trendy to buy movies (back around 1992). After I had plenty of those I took the jump to Laserdisc which seemed to impress everyone I knew. My friends would come to my house to watch actual Letterboxed versions of movies and the bonus features that came with them. Of course then i went to DVD but I really didn't want to sell off my LD's cause they looked so cool, like albums, but i eventually did. Now here I am with BD. I always said I wouldn't just sell my DVD's and get the Blu's but I eventually caved on that too. I worked in theater's as a projectionist for like 7 years and it is so cool to be able to watch my favorite films with better than theater quality in my own home. I can't see where it can go from here other than higher resolution which won't really make that much of a difference on average sized screens. The next thing is holograms I guess. Anyway I love movies, current count about 1000 DVD's and 300 Blu's. No more VHS and LD (all gone). Like someone else said I'm an indoor kid and what I do is watch movies. Interesting side note, I see BD as the LD to VHS. Oddly it seems like DVD as much as I love it never managed to look like film, BD when done right can, that's pretty awesome.

lol--- same situation with me-- I told myself over and over again that I'd only replace my all time favorites---
but after seeing the huge difference in PQ, the dvd version just rates a big
meh to me. If it's worth buying for my collection, it's worth upgrading to blu as far as I'm concerned-- and this site has saved me TONS of money in finding the very best deals out there--
a hobbies a hobby-- it's a constant expense always...

I wonder if I'll live to see the day I throwout my Blu-ray collection just like the 120plus VHS tapes this morning.
Taking up space, collecting dust, deteriorating and really, am I'm I ever going to watch material at 240 lines of resolution again?
Could I ever sit and watch even a moment of 2001 on VHS?.........ah........NO
It was actually quite painfull. Memories of buying/collecting/repeat viewings all gone
A number of those titles over the decades have been upgraded to Laser disc to DVD and now BR.

I collect Blu to enhance my viewing pleasure, I need the best!

I collected dvds but its a shitty collection. I just bought whatever. Now my taste has changed. I'll by epic blu rays and keep them as long as possible regardless new technology. Same with my dvds, i'll just keep them. Even if i cant watch them its the collecter in me saying, this is what movies used to come in.
