Default Experts on record players, question...

In about 1/2 hour of the movie Lara Croft Tomb Raider there is a close up of a record player. Does anyone know the make and estimated price? It looks extremely expensive.

I'm sure John will know since he is a vinyl guy. I believe the character of Lara Croft had a few bucks and lived in a mansion so I'd imagine it was rather expensive.

Yeah, saw the movie years ago, but for some reason I didn't pay much attention to her surroundings! LOL!

Is this it Jim?

Apparently it is a TEAC VPI HR-X1 and cost $19K a few years back.

I really don't have the (mainly financial) inclination to get back into vinyl, but the higher end turntables truly are things of beauty.

If I ever win the lottery I will have a custom one built - all steam punk and brass

Yes that looks like it. Lara's had a little more white vs chrome on hers but it does look like this one. $19K. Damn, costly isn't it?? With that kind of pricing, speakers must not be needed!!!!!

It took me awhile to figure how to do this but here is the unit Laura was listening to. It does look a little different then the unit posted above.

That sort of looks like my Clearaudio Statement which is $150K before arm and cartridge.

$150K before the arm and cartridge????????? I think they should have at least thrown those in.

One question: does it also make coffee?

I slightly mis-spoke. The Statement is about $125K, Tonearm is about $25K and then the cartridge is abotu $10K.

So, for about the price of a Mercedes S600, you can have this grand turntable.

The turntable will last forever, the Mercedes....well, maybe if you're lucky it'll last 10 years.

Question:

Other then looking fantastic what more does a $150K turn table do over a turn table that costs $300???

If one say "lasts longer", I can purchase a brand new $300.00 turn table every month for over 41 years for the same $150K

Well, it weighs almost 800 pounds. It has really good components. Dynamically balanced platters. Self leveling tonearm mounts. It uses the same microprocessor that is used in the Mars Rover to control the motor with the most accurate prcision. LCD display.

I read a review once that said this TT could make most people think they are listening to a CD versus an LP. I'm not sure that is necessarily a positive comment, but it was interesting. But then again, for over $150K, it better snuggle with me after we are done.
