good thread!! I will buy all 3 when they are out. But wish the contempt and ran was released under criterterion collection. I heard the studiocanal transfers are not first class.

I feel the same way. I'd prefer Criterion over Lionsgate any day, but I guess it's better than these titles not being released at all.

I came close to just picking up Ran on DVD during the B&N half-off Criterion sale, but I ultimately decided to wait on the Lionsgate Blu-ray edition. According to blu-ray.com's review for the UK release, the transfer is better than Criterion's SD-DVD.

Sadly a blu-ray that's just better than a dvd isn't enough for me, I'm hoping a better and more accurate representation of Ran gets released in the future.
Ran is one I've wanted to see for a long time.

I don't see a re-release happening any time soon...
I've never owned it, so if my choices are between the Criterion SD-DVD and the Lionsgate Blu-ray, I'm going to have to go with the Blu-ray. If it were a matter of me already owning it on DVD and having to decide whether or not to upgrade, I would stick with the DVD.

I thought for sure you imported the UK release! I am very happy with my copy, but the US release will be the same which is cool. :-) Plus it will cost you a lot less than importing it. Curious to see which stores will stock the titles, like Barnes & Noble, maybe Best Buy, you never know with them.

I ordered it and it sipped but got lost in the mail, so they refunded me and I am waiting for the U.S. one now.

Well you have something good to look forward to, still sad Criterion isn't releasing it. It seemed to get released with a good enough transfer and high bit rate so I can't complain. I still have the Criterion 2 Disc DVD set for those extras, like the commentary.

I'd rather have Criterion release Ran on Blu-ray (and they almost did too) but thats not happening now since Studio Canal took the rights back to release it themselves. And as you can see by Blu-ray.com's review (among others), they have done quite the shit job with it.

A movie as magnificent as Akira Kurosawa's Ran deserves MUCH better treatment than this...

Yeah. I'm buying StudioCanal's Ran anyways, but I would've loved to see Criterion put it out instead.

I would LOVE to own Akira Kurosawa's "RAN" but the video rating of this Blu release just doesn't do it for me so I'll stick with my current Criterion DVD release!

Good evening,

Actually, it appears that Studio Canal really did not do much with the transfer - which is one of the reasons why this release is problematic. It seems to me that the transfer they used was prepared quite some time ago, with SDVD in mind. Unfortunately, a lot of Kurosawa's films require special attention - particularly as far as color-timing is concerned. Additionally, while I have no doubts that a possible Criterion release would have been far more satisfying, I think that there would have been a number of limitations with it as well. Judging by how Criterion handled Kagemusha, it is obvious to me that Kurosawa's films, and specifically his color films, could be quite challenging when preparing for BD release. This said, had the severe edge-enhancement been addressed and some of the stronger denoising avoided, Ran would have looked a lot better.

Regardless, thus far the Studio Canal Collection has been terrific, and I hope to see as many classic films channeled through it as possible. Each single disc has been well worth getting, including Ran.

Pro-B

Ya I plan on doing the same.

Otherwise I'm happy with what I've seen/heard with the Studio Canal Collection. It's just to bad that the one film that means the most to me out of all of the one's announced and released has been botched.
