Default Is 1080i the best we can down load?

I just heard an advertisement by a satellite company stating they send their HD programs over 1080p.

Am I correct in saying that they may send 1080p but the most we can down load to our TV is 1080i??

I did a search and could not find info on this

I think its Dish Network that claims they have 1080p. The best you can get out of cable or DirectTv is 1080i. I think we need someone who has Dish to tell us if they're getting 1080p. I think it's only for the movie channels.

Some of the DirecTv on Demand stuff is 1080p. I haven't used it yet so cannot comment on the quality.

Good question!

I was told by the Cable Guy that 1080p formatted programming is too big to push through the cable for real-time viewing, and that they needed to reserve some of the cable bandwidth for their other stuff - internet, phone etc.

1080i, he said, was best suited for this purpose. However, it doesn't stop a 720/1080p download to a device/drive for later playback.

I know Comcast goes as high as 1080i and after talking with a Comcast rep she said thats about as far as they will go for now. But they are working on 1080P for future On Demand Movies. How long that will be is anyones guess.

1080p24 needs less bandwidth than 1080/60i. Maybe he was talking about 1080p60?

As far as I know both dish and DTV offer 1080p but only with VOD. Neither send the signals via satellite to be watched.

Correct... You're only getting 1080P with on demand which downloads from your router to your DVR... It could be some time before 1080P is broadcast live...

if its just downloading vs broadcast in real time, you could theoretically have any size resolution film, you only need time to download it. they could do a similar solution with cable for 1080p/24. id hate though to see streams overly compressed due to a marketing strategy just to claim a certain resolution, or a certain number of "hd" channels offered.

When i made the switch from Comcast to DirecTV I had both services in my house for 3 days. I compared the HD services on ESPN several times and the picture quality on Comcast HD was only a slight upgrade from the SD quality on DirecTV.

I've since been told that Comcast sends their HD signal as 576p and upscales to 720p or 1080i from the HD box. Not sure if that is true or not though.
