Default TV Shows in 2:35:1 ratio?

I'm sure a lot of us on here are fans of the 2:35:1 ratio. I feel the 1:78:1 to 1:85:1 has its uses but are there any TV shows you watch that you wish were more cinematic?

I wanted Stargate SG-1 to be in 2:35:1

I'd love to see these in 2:35:1-

That would be cool, we could put more flowers and nick-nacks on top of our really wide, not-very-tall 2+:1 TV.

16:9 is a really good ratio for TV IMO. If they want to be wider than that, they should be movies.

Hey, I have a 2.35:1 screen with a projector and an anamorphic lens. I would like to see if there were TV shows in 2.35:1. I recalled recently the Star Wars: Clone Wars TV series is actually in 2.35:1 on Blu Ray.

Anime would be great with the 2.35:1 aspect ratio, especially something like Tenchi muyo, or Afro Samurai. I also really think the aspect ratio would be ideal for sit coms. Think Everybody loves Raymond... in Cinemascope.

You could just put black masking tape on the top and bottom of your TV screen..... there you go, 2.35:1

now now come on with the masking tape and Raymond ideas, I'm serious. If a show is good enough why couldn't it be in cinemascope? Star Wars: Clone Wars is, and while animated, it looks really fantastic in that ratio. I think there are shows that could make proper use of it.

24 in 2.35:1 would be epic.

It's cool to see tv shows jump to the big screen and change ratios as well. Gives you a little something extra that you can't get on TV. The two X-Files films and The Simpsons Movie being prime examples, although I'm sure there are more.

As for The Clone Wars, I think it's ****ing awesome that George and co. are animating these in 2.35:1. Even if they're not broadcast that way, it shows that they still feel Star Wars is cinematic in any medium, and won't compromise.

For almost all viewers (those without anamoprhic setups), a 2.35:1 TV show would result in a smaller picture. Since giant sets, common among blu-ray.com members, are relatively uncommon among the general population, it doesn't make much sense for TV producers to film in any ratio other than 16:9.

Possibly they could film 16:9 but frame for 2.35:1 and make everyone happy.

And I'm serious too . You are talking to a guy with 2.35:1 screen to take advantage of cinemascope movies. Granted I don't watch a whole lot of television, Cinemascope really benefits productions that have range to see, such as a concerts, plays, fields or armies or for example a sit com nature. Flat widescreen productions are designed for giving height to objects (say dinosaurs or buildings), or to give a movie a clausterphobic feel to it. These movies are in these aspect ratio for a reason.

I feel that the 2.35 aspect ratio is something that separates the film experience from the TV experience. So I'd prefer to keep them separate. But They won't start shooting much in 2.35 for television unless 2.35 sets become popular.

I don't know. My whole point was some TV shows may be good enough to warrant more scope. Take the Star Trek TV shows for example. As for a 2:35:1 TV, I'd NEVER buy one. I can live with 'black bars' on my HDTV when I watch a 2:35:1 movie. If I watch something in a flat ratio, like the DVDs or live broadcasts of most current TV shows I'd be sacrificing so much height it would be tiny. No thank you. A 1:85:1 HDTV is a good 'one size fits all ratios' set in my book

They will not make TV Shows in scope, because TVs aren't scope (the literal handful of scope TVs don't count).

Anime creators don't like scope, they like their frame height. I had an interesting discussion once with one of the guys who did AniMatrix about how hard it was for him to change his style for it. There are a handful of scope anime. The second half of Be Forever Yamato, some Mazinger movies

Well, now (four years after original post) "House of Cards" is filmed in what, about 2:00:1? or something like that? It's close. It certainly has a wider look to it when played back on my TV.

I've seen shows go with a 2.35.1 prologue but the rest of the episode being in 1.78.1, but that's the closest i've seen.

While watching ABC tonight, I saw a commercial in 2.35:1.

And no, it was not a commercial for a theatrical movie.

It was an actual commercial for a product.

However, the tv series theirselves such as Once Upon a Time was in 1.77:1

Not only did I see a 2.35:1 made for tv commercial tonight, I have also seen a few other made for tv things in 2:35:1 in the past.

Despite many people saying nothing made for tv is produced or aired in 2.35:1.
There have been some.

However, all current prime time tv shows on the major over the air networks that I know of are all currently in either 1.77:1 or 1.33:1 depending on the show.

The cw has some Saturday morning cartoons in 1.77:1 but broadcasts them in letterboxed 4:3 making the actual shows windowboxed on a widescreen tv with the Vortexx logos in the black sidebar areas.

While at least some of their primetime shows are actually in 1.77:1 completely filling widescreen tv sets.

A 1.85:1 hdtv is good enough me for also. As long as it's a passive 3D tv.

After some years of certain tv shows not filling my tv screen, I want tv shows and movies to fill my tv screen.

I like a lot of old 1.33:1 tv shows and movies.

I have found out by watching that certain 1.33:1 tv shows do not work on a 1.77 tv since you do not get the intended effect on a 1.77 tv.

They play okay, but the intended effect is ruined.

I found out because I do watch the 1.33 tv shows and movies with black sidebars.

Zooming in crops stuff out which also ruins the intended effect.

Watching with sidebars, as you should, also ruins the intended effect.

Not all shows. But some scenes in some shows.

The only proper way to watch 4:3 tv shows is to watch them on a 4:3 tv set. That way you get the intended effect during those scenes of those tv shows.

But now I have a 1.77:1 3d tv.

I have always wanted a 3d tv since the early 1970's when I first found out about 3d.

I've seen some commercials and some music videos in 2.35:1.

And I think a couple of tv shows or maybe they were one time tv specials.

I can't confirm about the tv series or tv specials. Hard to remember.

But definitely some tv commercials and some made for tv music videos.
