Default Co-worker confused about Blu-ray

I was talking with a co-worker today trying to get him to purchase a Ps3 when he asked "why would I do that?" To which my first reply was "for the Blu-ray movies!" He said if he was going to do that he might as well get high definition movies...I said these are high definition movies...and he said no I mean get a real High Def player. I was getting mad at this point...I said what do you mean by real...and I told him why I thought Blu-ray was the better choice.
Then he says that he thought Blu-ray was just for the Ps3 like UMD was for the PSP...has anyone else come across this? Is the Ps3 synonymous with Blu-ray to the average consumer? Do they not know the awesomeness? I hope that people don't think just because the letters DVD are in HD-DVD that it's the only real high def format. Anyways, I had to tell somebody...do you guys think there is another BOGO next week?

I hope you set him straight. He was either feed misinformation or made far to many assumptions. I personally have not experienced this but hope it is a very small minority who think this way.

I think he was fed misinformation or he just assumed too many things as well. You should let him know that HD-DVD is just too limited with bandwidth & disc space. If you have been a member here for awhile you should know all the key points of Blu-Ray.

My suggestion to you is to take him to a store display and show him the AWESOME power that Blu ray is. I pointed someone to a display at Best Buy and they were in awe!!! I told him that is what he would get with the PS3. He stood there for 15 minutes watching the demo that was playing.

There is confusion about Blu ray and that is why all of the TV commercials that are comming out on Blu ray show "Blu ray Hi Definition".

I think it is easy to understand how some consumers would be confused and think that Blu-ray is to PS3 as UMD is to PSP.

This is an important reason why we need a good range of standalone Blu-ray players from a variety of manufacturers in stores for people to see.

I couldn't agree more, many of the older folks dont want anything to do with a gaming system because in they're minds it was created as a game system first blu-ray second. Yes I am aware that the PS3 is an incredible player but we are talking about perception here not facts.

I really can see how the general public may not be aware that Blu-ray is really a high definition (must spell that out) format that is superior to HD DVD.

For the most part, these people are not brain-washed into thinking that BD is NOT high definition, but that the name itself does not have the HD component in it, to make it obvious.

I try my best to inform others about Blu-ray and I always try to be fair and be as objective as I can about the subject. Nothing worse than going for broke and turning people off.

If someone tries to turn the conversation into a pi$$ing match, well, that's the end of the conversation.

I've had pretty good success, overall. Especially when I mention the PS3 as a "media" player.

its sucks that the general public doesnt know the difference between HDDVD and Blu Ray... its this that prolongs the war because they will eventually choose whatever is less costly and not what is necessarily the better format

Perhaps you should tell him that Blu-ray is "Beyond High Definition" while the other "high definition" (their words, not mine) is a format that strives to be just "good enough", as exemplified in this quote from a person who used to manage the HD-DVD group at Microsoft, one of their biggest supporters:

...
Or perhaps "very high definition" versus "moderately high definition". Taking audio into account I think you could justifiably call HD-DVD medium-high-def.

the thing about trying to convince other people who arent necessarily on either side of the format war to come over to blu is that you cant make them feel as if your biased against one/for another. you have to convince them first to go with a HD form of media and then when they ask you your opinion... tell them the truth. be like: theres 2 types of format i chose blu ray because (...) mainly state that theres more studios signed on, a larger disc size
thats how you get people UNconfused

and whatever you do dont start saying stupid shit like HDDUD & microdudder and M$ lol
