Angry Outrageous €uro pricing

I called to the newly opened Virgin Megastore which has just opened in our town and was delighted to see they have a few shelves of Blu Ray movies but the prices were outrageous. Prices varied between €22 ($30.8) and €64 ($89.4) for one film. I confronted one of the people working in the store and asked why the prices so high are? He went on to say that it was a new technology....I cut him short and said I already had 100 BDs and that I was importing them for between $15 - $25 and he was amazed. Anyone else in Europe finding that we are being ripped off in high street shops.

We get that in Canada a bit too... stuff is marked up over 50% in some cases over US pricing... and we rarely get the sales they do (like the $14 blu-rays)

Yeah, and to add insult to injury, the Canadian dollar is presently worth MORE than the US one! That's why I don't buy from Amazon.ca, and use Amazon.com instead.

I was shocked to see €64 for a single movie. I explained to the guy we can even buy these in cheaper from the UK. I am thinking of going down again to talk with the manager. I'll print out amazon.co.uk, sendit.com and amazon.com price listings. If they want to sell these titles they need to be cheaper.

To tell you the truth i cannot remember which film was €64 but Vacancy was €50 and Black Book was €54 and then they would have Flags of our father €22 and Open Country €20. The prices were all over the place. I suspect they will be down soon enough but you could imagine someone who knows nothing about the format being scared off in investing into it.

There was also a couple of rows of HD-DVDs selling on average €28 but the selection was nowhere near as big.

Here in belgium the prices are quite high, some of the big stores we have here(e.g. Fnac) don't even stock Blu-ray movies yet. However there is this rather small gamestore called l'obcede not to far from where i live that sells Blu-ray movies and its very cheap there, the owner is a real great guy, he checks online for the cheapest one and buys that one then.

In the U.S., Virgin is one of the highest priced shops. I only buy sale items from Virgin (they actually can have pretty good sales). But they rarely have their normal-priced items at a reasonable price.

Wow, it's really snowing hard right now (suburb of Denver, Colorado).

Actually, I never buy blu-rays at full price at any time, they're still too expensive for me. But there's enough BOGO stuff and one-off sales that I can usually find good stuff to get (and I just wait for the stuff I want until it goes on sale).

sorry if that sounds ignorant of me but it could have to do with prices.

Prices are stupid here in Ireland too... 50 Euro's for Disney titles, 40-45 for others. Gamestop has a small selection of BR's in the 20€ range and with the dollar in the toilet Amazon rocks as long as you only order one title at a time to avoid the customs tax.. (On the three for two sale I ended up paying 30€ import duty... ouch, but was still cheaper then 3 movies here at Virgin or HMV)

The other thing is that Blu-ray prices don't drop after release like DVDs, so Blood Diamond, for example, is down to £5 for the DVD on play.com, whereas the Blu-ray is still selling for £18, the same price it was first on sale at.

I never buy from any UK high street store, they over charge way too much. I shop online and I import the region free blu rays as they tend to be cheaper than any online UK seller.
I always use the following UK price compare site, they show the best price..
http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/ and
http://www.region2-dvds.co.uk/ They may help you guys find a good buy.

i got a big chunk of my blu rays off ebay and payed from 15-20$ US for them shipped.
ebay is good like that.. except i got screwed with casino royale and got a case that had the stickers placed directly on the case and when he tried peeling it off it was just a huge disaster
