Please help me decide between Samsung UN46B8500 or LN52B750

The UN46B8500 is local LED dimming and it cost about $500 more then the

LN52B750 which is not LED

both tv's got rated in the top 5 of 2009

For $500 extra i get a smaller screen from 52 to 46 but get local dimming and thing frame

or should I save the $500 and get the bigger screen non LED tv which is also highly rated

I've got the Sammy 55" LCD, and I love it. To me, the difference between the two displays do not justify the price difference.

Plus, size matters...

I am just torn because I dont want to regret anything when dealing with expensive stuff

I do like the idea of the LN55B650 that I can get at the same price as the LN52B750 for the extra 3 inches but i do not like the red color and the v shape bezel at the bottom

So I will forget the sweet UNB8500 because it is to much money

But I am going to decide between the LN52B750 or LN55B650

both cost the same..

I'm on the same boat, and I decided to go with the LN52B750. I just need for Sears to give me the refund from a 54" S1 I returned, so I can finally buy it

Why the LN52B750?
Well, because most claim that's the only model what will guarantee you a S-PVA panel. I saw a LN52B750 in person, and the viewing angles are indeed very good.
Also, the B750 has 240hz, which gives it better motion resolution, scoring around 900-1,000 lines. Believe it or not, that is VERY important, and very noticeable. The S1 I returned is a simple 60hz (60hz*10-subfields) plasma, but it scores 1080 lines. Words can't describe how smooth extreme motion from video games looks. Lets just say that I broke all my Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and Need For Speed Shift records in a matter of 2 days. The sense of control was so huge compared to my 60hz LCD, which scores around 300-400. The B650 scores around 500-600. To me, motion is very important.

However, there is also Input lag. Samsung is famous for being pretty much the worst in that area. The B750 is faster than the B650 (2ms vs 4ms according to Samsung, but more like 90~100ms vs 100~110ms according to professional reviews). I honestly can't say how fast or slow that is, but I hope is not terrible. My 60hz LCD and the S1 are VERY FAST.

However, If that is not of your concern, then maybe Contrast is. I've read reviews and seen them both in person, and indeed the contrast in the B650 is better than the B750, despite Samsung saying otherwise. I don't know about shadow detail tho', but those normally go hand-and-hand, and it can't be too far off. However, the difference is not a deal breaker.

I would say, go for the B650 if you have a way to guarantee a good S-PVA panel. The deeper blacks will look better in movies, and 120hz will be more than enough because movies don't have as extreme motion as video games.
However, if you appreciate motion a little bit more, and plan to use the screen as a do-it-all TV, the the B750 might be a better choice. I'm personally going for the B750, as soon as I get that damn check from Sears.

Also, the B750 looks uber sexy.

I personally think the UNB8500 is out of the question. Sure it has local dimming, but I'm not sure the price tag is worth it. However, if it had a crazy LED matrix like the CELL TV they showed at CES, then we're talking. Or maybe just wait until the OLED TVs come out. If you are so crazy about contrast, just get a plasma, and have a more precise contrast. Otherwise, surrender to the LCD limitations, and enjoy an LCD for what it is. I personally think the LN52B750 is the happy medium between price vs performance.

At the moment I am looking at 2 choices only

I have removed the 46B8500 due to being small and to costly

My choices are the LN52B750 or the UN55B8000

about $200 dollar difference.

Not sure if the B8000 is worth the extra couple of hundred for the extra 3 inches over the B750 which I hear is exceptional

According to CNET, the B750 has better motion resolution, a more uniform screen, and the viewing angles are better. Plus, it's cheaper. Between those 2, the B750 is superior, is just that the B8000 is aimed at a different target audience. The B8500 is the true successor of the B750, not the B8000.

I've seen the B8000 in person as well, as I've been doing lots of research myself for my next Tv. B8000 does have a better contrast than the B750, putting it right there with the B650, if not a tiny-bity better. About the viewing angles or screen uniformity, is hard to tell, as I didn't pay much attention, I was mainly focus on the more affordable models. However, at first glance it was not bad, I just don't how it will truly perform in the home. But like I said before, the edge-lid LEDs are known for having bad viewing angles, and CNET is not the only one to say that.

I saw the B750 and B650 next to each other and I felt the b750 looked better with better blacks

not by much but it was evident to my eye

I love the fact that the B650 is 55 inches

but hate the v shape bottom and red color...

b750 is very sleek and sexy

Like I said before, the LN52B750 is the only one with a guarantee S-PVA panel, or so people say. With the LN55B650, you never know which one you are gonna get. Maybe you saw a crappy one. I saw a really good B650 at Sears, which had a bit deeper blacks than the B750. Just watch the first few seconds of this video I took that day of the B650:

Like I said, I've being doing my research for a LONG TIME. Forget what I say in that video, the S1 is already returned because it turned out to be a disappointment. All I can say, is that the black level of that B650 I saw that day seemed deeper than the S1 I owned, even in a pitch black room.

And yes, the B750 is damn sexy.

BTW, when are you planning to buy yours? Because I plan to buy mine within a week. I just need to find it for no more than $1,700. I've seen a few for $1,699.

Thats cool and all that you thought the B650 had deeper blacks then B750 but i just dont see it that way

I saw both next to each other and regardless of the room lighting if one was better then the other then it would stand out

I saw both next to each other in 2 diff stores and both times the blacks and overall image quality was better on the 750

I am not saying by much but it was there for me

I think the b650 looks incredible as well but not as good as the 750

and i hate the red color and the v shape bottom....that is a huge turn off for me

I felt the same way as you guys did. I hated the V-line and the red ToC on the 650, and I loved the B750 compared to just about any other HDTV out there (I've never seen an 8500).

In the end I went with the Amazon deal of $1699 with 24 months no interest and a free Samsung BD-P1600 which goes for about $100 new on ebay.

I thought this was a pretty good deal and I'm loving my Sammy B750!
