That's easy. It was 2001: A Space Odyssey. When I walked out of the theater (at the age of 12), I knew that not only would I eventually be employed in a technical career, but I looked at life from a much larger perspective and developed a love of astronomy that I still maintain 42 years later.

Well I cannot think of one that changed my life, but I remember when I saw The Boys In The Band about twenty five years ago after I had just come out and it scared me to death because I thought I was going to end up being like the characters in the film.

I felt the same way about my (adoptive) dad, who was in the European theater in WWII. He would rarely talk about his experiences, but after seeing Band of Brothers, I think I can identify more of what he went through.

2001 for me too. Didn't see it until age 29, and had already studied science, but it radically changed my scientific, philosophical and spiritual perspective on life. |

Great choice. It hasn't necessarily changed my life, but I do think of it often and remind myself of the simple joys all around us.
This is a great question, albeit a difficult one. Schindler's List changed my life in that it made me fully realize, in a visual way, the atrocities that befell millions of people only 65-70 years ago. Likewise for Hotel Rwanda. 12 Angry Men changed my life by showing me that even things that appear obvious should be more closely examined, a fair chance given. Judgment at Nuremberg showed me that even the worst crime can have reason behind it--it's all about perspective. I think American Beauty also greatly affected me, especially the bag scene (as parodied as it is), because it made me realize that people oftentimes hide behind these seemingly perfect facades, but are equally conflicted as myself and others. The bag scene reminds me of the beauty that's apparent every moment of every day, as long as we take to the time to truly look around us. To quote Dan Millman, who wrote The Peaceful Warrior (adapted into a film), "There are no ordinary moments." |
