Unhappy George Hotz: The PS3 is 100% hacked.

http://translate.google.nl/translate...l&tl=en&swap=1

Pisses me off to see this happening to a great console that needs better support. I guess it was bound to happen.

Whats the big deal? I see this as a good thing. You can get more out of your PS3.

This is most likely not true. I wouldn't believe it 'til there are videos of hacks running. These claims are a dime a dozen.

What exactly would change if it were hacked?

I agree. Until there are more then just words, I am skeptical.

This is a good thing, just like with the iPhone this opens up a world of possibilities with the system. You can do so much more with it when a big community gets involved like this. We get more features and in the end it puts pressure on Sony to give us more what we want in the system when they see how popular certain hacks are. The iPhone is proof of that, apple has added quite a few features over the last year that came straight from the jailbreaking community.

I'd believe it, geohot is very well known in the iPhone community and does some very good work. I can assure you he's not going to publish this if he hasn't actually got it working.

Check him out: geohot's PS3 blog

hacking doesnt interest me.
i dont play many games so downloading games to play for me = whatever.
i play maybe 3 different games.

plus i already have all my snes, nes, genesis etc on my psp 2000 model.

besides running old game system emulators & 'free downloaded games'......whats the point of hacking the ps3?

It's not just about the games though, this would open the possibility of putting 3rd party software on the PS3. Like XBMC/Boxee all kinds of other software. You could essentially change the whole look of the PS3 to run however you want with what ever interface you want.

I've been following this with great interest and I've been asking around Sony and IBM whether he has anything and they seem extremely certain he will never gain access to the root key which is essential for any type of bootloader.

They say he may get some sort of privileged access in OtherOS, but that's not going to lead anywhere unless someone writes a driver for RSX in Linux which isn't easy without Nvidia's help.

Next up he seems to think that the PS3 is the same as iPhone or PSP security, but it isn't. iPhone and PSP can run arbitrary code without requiring the root key, it's literally (and I mean it) impossible to run any code without requiring the root key to decrypt (which as discussed is impossible).

Until he shows some real proof that he has a 'Hello World' running inside GameOS he's chatting absolute shit and just attention wh0ring.

Looks like the most he'll be able to do with this is allow people to rip game assets. Read the replies on his blog, and he's pretty much admitted that he's never going to get an isoloader or homebrew in GameOS.

There's a lot of progress for open-source drivers for nvidia's recent GPUs (6000 and up), if someone found the right hypervisor calls to use, we'd probably have decent accelerated OpenGL in linux in less than 6 months. It'd certainly be faster than waiting on the Cell version to get better.

With Sony constantly updating firmware, I don't see this as an option for me. Good for the hacking community, but in these constantly-hooked-on-the-Internet days I don't care to be banned/have my machine bricked because of stuff like this.
