Default Looking for a new Blu Ray Player

I am looking at getting a new blu ray player, and was going to ask this question first.

What is the best blu ray player out right now, that has the least amount problems?

I was looking at a Samsung, but after reading some of the threads on here forget that,

So which one is the best? ( Least amount of problems! )

OPPO BDP-83
OPPO BDP-80

Sony -- Model ?

LG -- Model ?

Any others??

The Oppo BPD-80/83 are great and Oppo is very quick with firmware updates and other customer service requests. Some other manufacturers have their own special features or applications(LG might have the most), but for me most are useless(Super Bit Mapping from Sony is intriguing, but I haven't actually seen it).

The only way I would recommend another manufacturer was if you wanted a player capable of 3d blu-ray playback or a multidisc player.

What is the load time on the OPPO BDP-80/83?

And which one is better? 80 or 83?

Varies per disc obviously, but it's as fast or faster on most titles than my PS3.

What are your prioritizes with the player? Are you interested in playing music at all, CDs or SACDs? You have alot of SD DVDs?

The Oppo BDP80 wasn't made to compete with the 83. I have it and for $289 and the features I need it has, it is an absolute steal. Want more? I have used it more than anyone except beta testers since it has been released to the public and no problems whatsoever!

My BDP-83 and BDP-80 reviews can offer a lot of detail, but here's a quick overview.
  • Load times are basically identical on both players, and are fast. For some tasks, they are a few seconds slower than the PS3. For other tasks, they are a few seconds faster than the PS3. In either case, they are fast.
  • The BDP-80 is based on the BDP-83's basic platform, so the core feature sets are the same. The BDP-83 offers some extras.
  • One extra on the BDP-83 is the ABT2010 video processor, which makes a slight difference for Blu-ray but allows for better scaling and deinterlacing of DVD. If you have a separate video scaler that is comparable to the ABT2010, the BDP-80 is a good choice (using the "source direct" output). If you have a large screen and don't have a device in the path that is as good as the ABT2010, the BDP-83 is a great solution for standard DVD's. It also offers some extra zoom control options, which are most likely to be of benefit if you have a CIH front projection system.
  • The BDP-83 has a more robust analog audio output. It offers a stereo analog output and a separate 7.1 analog output, with higher-end Cirrus DAC's than you usually find in players. The BDP-80 has a 7.1 analog output that is more comparable to what you find on players in the <$500 price range. It's good, but not as excellent as the stock BDP-83 or the upgraded BDP-83SE (which replaces the Cirrus DAC's with ESS DAC's).
  • The BDP-83 has an aluminum faceplate. The BDP-80's plastic faceplate looks like aluminum until you get right up on it.
  • The BDP-83 has a backlit remote included as well as two calibration Blu-ray discs. The BDP80 has a similar remote without the backlight (although you can get the backlit version from OPPO for a few bucks extra if you want it) and doesn't come with calibration discs.

I hope that helps.

I will be using the blu ray player, as a blu ray player only. No DVD's, No CD's, only blu-ray movies.

My receiver has an onboard ABT1018. How much better is the 2010? Would I notice a marked difference on DVD upscaling between the two?

Thanks!

+1 I vote for the BDP-83 but then again I have the Sony BDP-S370 (Replaced BDP-BX1) and love it.

The BDP-80 is probably a good candidate for you, then. Probably the only reason to consider moving up to the BDP-83 would be if you had a good quality surround receiver without HDMI support and a good surround system, as in that case the better analog section in the BDP-83 could be of value for Blu-ray.

The ABT1018 is a scaling chip. Early production DV-983H players (the last DVD player that OPPO built) used that and an ABT102 deinterlacer chip; later production units used the ABT2010, which combined the functions of both. Since deinterlacing is so important with DVD, the 2010 does have some advantages over the 1018.

It's the Yamaha RX-Z11 I am referring to. The scaling chip is the ABT1018 and the deinterlacing chip is the iChips IP00C772. I'm currently using a Denon 1920 DVD player and letting the Yamaha perform the upconversion. It looks decent, but I was wondering how much (if any) of an improvement I'd see in DVD upconversion by moving to the OPPO 83.

Thanks for the insights.

I have a Samsung BD-P3600 and never had an issue with it. I am going to move that to the bedroom and get a new one myself. I am either going to get a Samsung BD C-7500 or the 6500 or an LG BD590 to maybe get something different. Both companies have new models out and can be purchased from Amazon and they are in stock....the Samsung is 3D capable playback.

If you want 3d wait a little bit, but if you want it now I can only say what I know and that is the LG BD390. I love it, it's fast and looks great! It has Netflix, Vudu and Cinema Now. I only use Netflix though. and it's also has wireless capabilities, so no ethernet cords

The LG BD390 is a good call (great player) but also discontinued. It can still be found on ebay and amazon I believe but you will pay through the *$$ for it. If going with an LG model my advice is to get the newer LG BD590 (which replaces the BD390, or the less expensive BD570......just a thought.....the newer ones are all ready in stock at amazon.
