Default HD-DVD sales

http://www.hdtvuk.tv/2006/11/hd_dvd_shipment.html

1.5 million units of what exactly? Players? Movies?

Hmm, methinks a certain blu-ray playing console should exceed that within the next couple of months...

Theres only been 70k hd dvd players shipped with local BB's still having them in stock...and Wally World not being able to sell the RCA....except to me...which I returned for playback problems.....and they have replaced both hd dvd displays with the Philips BD player....which they will also have a hard time selling for 898.00.

In contrast to these miniscule numbers...SA-CD had over 10 million players installed players around two years ago...with new models still being introduced today....who knows how many there are sold now.

The two HD formats combined are not even close to nitchie status yet....so sales numbers don't mean much IMO.

And from all accounts that I've read SA-CD is a dead format that is not really even supported by Sony any more. Too bad, because I really love the quality of music on this format. There are still a few new titles being released but it's a dwindling, not a growing market.

1.5 million movies sold.

Toshiba's initial shipment was 70k and RCA roughly 20k

Still waiting to find out what Microsoft's initial Xbox HD DVD drive allotment was.

My guess is by years end there will be 400-500k HD DVD playback devices in homes.

The PS3 will dwarf this number but it remains unclear how many people will take advantage of the Blu-ray drive. It's going to be interesting tracking the Blu-ray movies sales over the next 6 months.

I had thought the HD-DVD add-on's were completely sold out based on the banter at avsforum. However Fry's had a stack of HD-DVD add-ons as well as the A-1's (Another AVS member said they were the same units for over a month as he checked the serial number). I'm guessing it was just CC's that initially sold out due to the $40 coupon. Heck at $160 I'd buy the crippled HD-DVD player to try out.

That's what I did, just to pass the time until I get either the Pioneer or Sony player. I've only seen parts of King Kong so far and I was pretty impressed. Not bad at all for some pocket change. For reference....I have 30+k in home theater equipment (B&K separates, Martin Logans all around, etc....)

No way in hell there is 400-500k HD DVD players in peoples homes by years end. RCA is a joke. They are lucky if the sold 2,000. The 2nd gen. Toshibas are delayed to mid-December and could be longer.

This is almost as funny as Microsoft claiming 10 million 360's by years end when they've only sold 4.5 million in a year but they're going to double this in the next 45 days. LMAO.

I love these PR pieces that are presented as news, but are blatant bullshit. Companies release these press statements that aren't quite lies, but not entirely the truth in the hopes of getting some advertising traction. From the release:

Quote:
The US based HD DVD Promotional Group
That should tell you that what you are about to read is complete and utter BS. Rdjam might as well have written this himself.

Quote:
total shipments of the HD DVD format has now reached 1.5m
Shipments of what? Players? Movies? Blank media? Probably all of the above.

Quote:
Around 110 movies are now on the format.
So let's bother and do the math. Assume that the press release is only mentioning movies and there are 110 titles. 1.5 million/110=13,636. So there are only about 14,000 copies of each movie out there. That would tell me they only need to press any given movie for an install base of 14,000. Remember, these are only shipments of something HD-DVD format related. Not items sold. I've got a bridge to sell if anyone's buyin'!

factor in the coupon and the inclusion of the remote and kong and it's like getting the add on for $100 bucks. Thats the main reason I bought it, and because my 360 doesnt get much playtime for games from me anymore so it's alteast getting some use now.

The Toshiba A2 is delayed a month but that shouldn't prevent them from delivering thousands worldwide.

Japan
Australia
Euro launches all have yet to commence.

They should hit 200k here including A1 sales.

Then you add in 150-200k Xbox 360 Add on.

Now we're at 350k

Next you have RCA, Laptop units and potentially the HP USB player.

400-500k

That's not a dream that cogent and concise. 400-500k players worldwide by years end.

That I would like to see..!

If it is true, my weighting would be much more heavily on the 360 add on.

If they have only sold in the order of 50k HD DVD players in 6 months, I don't see them doing any more than that before years end.

What's even funnier is the original claim from E3 that MS would have a 10 million unit headstart before the competition entered the market. Well, the competition entered the market last week, what was that headstart number again? Oh yeah that's right they changed it to EOY 2006, good times.

and we all know that isn't going to happen. just look at avg sales and ask yourself if you think MS can come close to that in the next 45 days.

Depends whom do U ask Bunch of xbox fanboys think that because of the PS3 shortages most of the frustrated PS3 buyers will go and buy xbox 360. May be MS is counting on that too?

see, being a gamer who's ps2 busted in his last move, i have been without a game console for almost two years. the 360 launched, and i said who cares. ps3 will be out, and it will kick ass. at the time, i didn't know all the extras the ps3 will include. now, i know and am wowed. if i could get my hands on a ps3, i would. the 360 holds nothing for me and im sure it holds no appeal for the people who camped out. there is a reason they were there and it's not for the 360. i see most people being in my boat and having no desire for the 360 at this point. they want this years hotness, not last years hot. besides, sony has built a very loyal following and i don't see that being sacrificed here.

Exactly what I was referring to, just was too lazy to pull the post.

Funny thing is MS fanbosy even MS employees at AVS attacked me for bringing that up recently..

It would have to have sold how many million by today? The competition entered. I'm guessing they aren't even remotely close to that figure, considering they've haven't even SHIPPED remotely close to that figure.. My local best buy and fry's have like 40+ 360's each on the shelf.
