It struck me as I read through a couple of the "is title xxx worth a blind buy" threads, that it is no longer a blind buy if someone recommends it to you.
So... doesn't asking for recommendations negate the concept of a blind buy? I mean, basically, if 30 of us in the forum recommend a movie to you when you ask about it... then you're not really blind buying anymore in the same way as you would if you knew nothing about the movie. This is not a bashing thread... but just a conceptual thread. Nothing wrong with asking for reviews/recommendations... I do it too... but it just struck me that when I ask about something then I'm an informed buyer rather than a blind one. |

I still see it as a blind buy if that person hasn't seen the movie. Just because a bunch of people here like it and recomend the flick doesn't mean you will like it as well.
Asking for opinions just gives you a feel for what the movie will be like. |

Actually it would still be considered blind until you watch it yourself, regardless of who recommends it (or how highly they recommend it).
An example: You are set up on a blind date by a friend. You've obviously never met this person (hence the term "blind date"), but your friend says "You're really going to like this one." Does it cease to be a blind date simply because your friend said you would like her? |

(Those who are in favor of BB'ing instead of renting have come up with abstract "subculture" reasons why they like it, whenever they're told that every Blockbuster on every corner has a Netflix BD for rent: "Well, it's like the adventure of it, and you can get the resale!"... While also trying to look cute saying "Oh, man, I'm gonna be so broke on Tuesday, buying every single title that gets released!" Three years ago, back when 1 title came out every month, that was cute. Nowadays, when 15 titles come out every week, it's kind of pathetic. Yes, you miss those '07 days when we all flew by the seat of our pants, and you don't want to face the simple fact that We Won, that the rest of us can now all sit back and become fat, happy and contented about our BD releases nowadays, and that just about every darn new release comes out in BD, which doesn't seem as "special" now as it used to. It's called "Progress", and facing progress is called "Growing up".) |

I just noticed... I didn't actually type "xXx".. but it must have auto-corrected to that from what I typed when I posted
![]() Regarding blind buy vs blind date... Some blind buy threads actually contain screen caps or links to screen caps or reviews and complete ratings of the video/audio + plot summary and content review. I don't think I'd consider it still a blind date if I had access to pictures, video, and the dating-quality-ranking of the blind date in advance ![]() I guess where I'm really going here is... To me, a blind buy is when I've seen a movie trailer 6 months ago and that's it... or maybe I like the actor from other movies, but don't know much about the main movie. When I go on a forum like this and read reviews and other user comments about the movie.. I don't feel as "blind" anymore if I decide to jump on the purchase. I used to do a lot more blind buys of DVDs from the bargain bin. Basically if I had any reason to think it might not be horrible, then a $5 DVD wasn't a bad risk. I've done a little of this with some $10 Blu rays... but generally the prices are averaging high enough that I want to make a more informed buy and not go in so blind. |

![]() ![]() I think you have a good point, and I am a lot more selective now than I was in the DVD days. I bought a lot of cr@p back then, and have long since whittled down my remaining DVD collection to only titles that I really like. I generally won't buy a blu now unless I have a good idea that I will like it. Keeping that in mind, I blind bought Star Trek, District 9, Kung Fu Panda, Terminator: Salvation, and Transformers: ROTF last year (among others). The fact that they were researched, and I was positive that I would like them, didn't change the fact that I was still walking blindly into the purchase. Had I rented them, streamed them, or seen them in the theater, then I would have had my own first hand knowledge when I purchased them. There was still the chance that any of us can hate a movie, no matter how many reviews we read, pictures we look at, trailers we watch, etc. My GF and I have very, very similar tastes in movies, and she literally left the room in the middle of District 9. ![]() ![]() |

I came here to say that I tried to click on this link at school, and it was blocked because it had XXX in the URL.
![]() But since I'm here, I would say that unless you've seen it, it's still blind buy. People's recommendations aren't always a guarantee you'll like it. |

Again: You're going to buy a disk in order to be able to watch it again at some future point at your leisure--
...So, why not have the first time be a rental? Any reasons against, or are you trying to impress with what an "adventurous gambler" you are? ![]() ('Cause, like, it isn't working.) |

To me, there is a difference between an impulse buy and a blind buy. An impulse buy is when you are in a store and you see a movie for a good price and say "what the heck." This is the bargain bin purchase the OP talked about - a purchase you haven't had the time or desire to research, and bought it as a matter of impulse. The two are not mutually exclusive, as an impulse buy can also be a blind buy (and by the same token, a blind buy can also be an impulse buy). But no matter how much thought or research you put into a purchase, it's still blind if you've never experienced it for youself.
I never heard my first eD A2-300 sub and despite the fact that I read hundreds of reviews / testimonials from other users, saw pics, etc, it was still a blind purchase for me. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by progers13; 02-25-2010 at 12:26 AM. |
