You can buy bottles of record cleaning solution and various brushes in a kit for fairly cheap. Search for it on eBay or check out some place that sells vinyl

I use a super inexpensive one that has carbon fiber and something that is either like velvet or velour. (don't really know what it is), but I got it from Sleeve City for like $5 and it works suprisingly well. |

I'd avoid that method: the risk of leaving soap residue behind is too high. (Unless one is using it to clean *really* cruddy records before cleaning them using an RCM or similar...)

a good rinse gets rid of the soap residue.
Anyway, the question of the thread was " Best way to cheaply clean vinyl". a few drops of soap, a paint brush and a good drying towel was around 10 bucks. That's a lot cheaper than hundreds for a vacuum machine. OR you could use the wood glue method. But it takes too long for me. |

Up late are we?
![]() Here goes: I picked up a group of nice lps at the Tulanae WTUL record fair a few weeks ago. In all, everything was perfect. And then there was Jethro Tull! Thick As A Brick looked really good. The outer cover and inner sleeve was mint. The LP itself was spot on nice. No marks, mars, scratches, etc. Yet, upon playing, it had the most hideous surface noise! Snap, crackle, pop..., just like Rice Crispies!!! Now, I couldn't take that from such a fine, brilliant lp. So, off to the VPI 16.5. Well, that had NO effect. So, I cleaned it again. Still, Rice Crispies. Again, I cleaned. Nada. So, I resorted to the wood glue. I mean, my God! I've applied it to each side twice, and still this is the pitts! Dust from H E L L ! ! ! ! Moral of the story? There is none. Just get a quieter version of this stupendous record! I' still looking.... |

Great story Fred! I've had similar expereinces back in the day when I had my NittyGritty 2.0. Sometimes you just have to give in and say.....I need a better copy. John |
