I saw that someone has in their HT 2 projector screens.
Is that necessary in order to watch a movie in 2.35/2.40:1 and 1.78:1/16X9? I ordered a PT-AE4000U. I just wanted to know if I can get away with one. Thanks. |

Honestly, its completely unnecessary. I would choose as most of us have. I went with 16:9 for several reasons, mostly due to cost / convenience.
Since my projector has inky blacks, honestly I don't see black bars much if at all, I usually feel as though I am watching a 2.35:1 screen. ![]() But unfortunately not all projectors, or room setups are great with blacks. I would suggest testing out how your projector does on the wall first, see if you notice black bars, or whether they really bother you or not. It could also greatly depend on the types of movies you watch (2.35 / 1.85 / 1.33), and whether you want to strictly use the screen for only movies. Then choose for the majority of content you enjoy. Of course you can always go with any screen and come up with DIY masking for the black bars. |

Thanks folks. Some good info. When i visually put both screens on top of each other it reminds me of the chevy symbol.
Most of my movies are 2.35:1. I wasnt sure if the projector would "fit" the picture to the screen. I will do as suggested and play with the projector on a wall and play different movie ratios. |

I have a 2.35:1 screen and while I would love to have curtains for the screen, it's generally not necessary to use 2 or 3 screens. There really shouldn't be black bars for a 16:9 image in a 2.35:1 screen. If you use a true anamorphic lens set up, you also shoudn't see light leakage below the screen unlike zoom lens memory features that are used as "anamorphic lens emulator" that leave light leaked out of the screen.

sorry to barge in on the OP's thread, but i am also looking into a pj setup and have also been debating the aspect ratio of the screen
would it be most versatile to go for a 2.4:1 screen? that way couldn't i enjoy 2.4:1 movies all the way down to 1.33:1 content? in terms of cost, its not an issue if an identical 2.4:1 screen is more than a 16x9 screen. it might be worth it in my opinion... (i am looking to get the panny pt-ae4000u) thanks in advance guys |

I agree with you gosawx. I struggled with which to get and found that I'd still have a 100" 1.78 screen which was plenty big enough. When watching a scope movie, the difference in image size between a 2.35 screen eventually won me over and really does take immersive to the next level.

RE: Screen Size/Ratio - Sometimes it might depend on your room/wall situation. My situation was more conducive to a 2.35 ratio (which I prefer). But maybe start with going as wide as you can and then determine if you have the height for 16x9 or if 2.35 would work better.
Maybe it also depends on whether or not you prefer black bars on top and bottom or on the sides. I prefer the sides. Last edited by DAK4; 03-01-2010 at 05:06 PM. |

DAK4, was your home built prior to having your projector? I am wondering how your cable was placed.
No sweat Erman_94. my home i just bought will be finished in 3 months. trying to explain what i want to do with my cables to people that dont even know what an hdmi cable is is a daunting task. i have given up and compromised with myself on some things such as the speaker cables. they will be run around the base board; i figured i need an outlet at the ceiling and an hdmi cable running to an area i will place my componets. the room is 14' wide and 22' long with a 9 foot ceiling. please feel free to comment, idea, experiences, etc. all is appreciated. thanks |

scope screens are awesome. but if you don't have the screen wall width to accomodate a large enough one, 16.9 will suffer.
my 119" masked to 2.35 is 113'. at 12' viewing distance, it is pretty nice. but, sadly, i cannot say it is "awesome", to me anyway. now. good 1.85 movies, that is another story. |

The home was built before the projector, I have an attic that I was able to run the cables through and there is a lot of space next to the fireplace to come down through. I did though run speaker wire though the house to the rear surrounds/living room/patio right before they put the drywall on. I mapped/measured off the walls where the wires were located so I could come back later and find them and it actually worked. If you don't have an attic you might consider this option for your speakers and cables. You could use a "pull wire"(dummy wire) for pulling your cables through later if you want. Also, I used a heavy duty extension cord from the projector to the power conditioner, I think it's a little cleaner looking at the ceiling without an outlet.
