i was wondering if anyone knows if you can buy blu-rays at amazon.uk and be able to play them here in the states since they have a larger variety of movies

Another company to try is http://www.sendit.com/, they have a good choice of Blu Ray movies at way cheaper prices then Amazon.co.uk, they also ship to the USA.
