I have to agree. The transfer is so uneven, in one shot it is full of grain and in the next shot it is sharp and clear.
Having said that - I think that "Clash of the Titans" was never a particularly clean movie anyway.

I am also sitting on the fence, but may end up getting it anyway because I like it.

I still plan to get it so I can retire the VHS tape. Here's what the review here said about it:

Quote:
Let me be very, very clear from the outset: Clash of the Titans has never been an attractive film, nor will it ever be. Grain attacks and retreats ad nauseum, poorly lit scenes abound at every turn, and Harryhausen's stop-motion sequences are often mired by murky blacks and blurry live-action footage. As such, Warner's 1080p/VC-1 transfer will strike many casual viewers -- those finicky masses who despise grain, embrace noise reduction, and can't stand a filmic presentation -- as an absolute mess. However, to the studio's credit, texture-sapping DNR, irresponsible artificial sharpening, and other pesky techniques have been left by the wayside, paving the way for a fairly faithful (but somewhat flawed) high definition debut.

It *is* remastered. It's the way it's supposed to look.
The Mt. Olympus scenes were shot with soft filters and heavy grain. The opticals of this film also have built in layers of dirt & grain.

It's like complaining that The Elephant Man isn't in color.

Would you prefer a waxy DNR-ed to death version instead?

my wife is the aficionado for this movie and we watched like half of it last night and will finish it tonight.

I asked her what she thought of the PQ compared to other versions and she said it was ok, in a few scenes we noticed the sharpness and colors that stood out but overall the source material is pretty jacked up so what can you expect.

she said you can definitely notice more details in the special effect animals.....

it is uneven but would be worth it for serious fans. she enjoyed some of the extras even though they were quite limited

Correct Clash of the Titans was a very cheaply made film and the source material is not of the greatest quality. This is a film that is very hard to do in HD. You'll have some people who want the studio to clean it up and restore it which usually means using DNR and other such methods. Then you have the others that want it to stay in it's natural state with only removing dirt or imperfections in the film.

I am in the later category leave the grain and other things alone but clean up the dirt and such.

That said this is one of my favorite movies from my early youth and I will buy it eventually. However, I can't justify buying it at the $25 to $30 price tag it released at when I can get Disney Classics for $10 to $15.

The only copy of this film that I've ever owned, and the last version I've seen, has been a taped-from-TV copy on VHS. Therefore, although the video quality of Clash of the Titans is said to be pretty poor, I am still very much looking forward to seeing it and owning it. I doubt there will ever be a better remaster of the film because like many have said, it's the way the film was shot in the first place.

My copy is on its way from Amazon and I'm pumped!

Ya, it never had the greatest quality regardless so I wasn't surprised. I may still get this when the price drops a little. I love me some Haryhausen stuff.

This is the best this movie will ever look. If you're still on the fence, my copy came with $7.50 movie cash for the upcoming re-release in the theaters.

The source material may be limited but it still seems to look like Warner didn't go to any great lengths to make it look good, to my eyes the disc shows more limitations of the transfer rather than film. I know its supposed to be pretty ugly, but not EVERY shot is a grainy optical effect

Default Very poor PQ

I saw this at the theater originally and it did not look this bad. Worst PQ I have run across thus far since getting into Blu-ray. I bought it for the memories, but believe me, this is clearly not up Blu-ray standards. Looks like DVD and a really bad one at that. If you picked up Warner's Neverending Story on the same day as I did, it's a REAL doctor Jeckle and Mr. Hyde affair. Neverending Story looks pretty darn good, better than I had hopes for, but Clash of the Titans.....what a mess. For two movies to be shot like 3 years apart, it's amazing to see the difference in quality here.

Oh my God talk about film grain and not in a good way. Get ready to max out your DNR filter in your bluray player! The film grain in this is nothing short of obnoxious! I am now curious to rent the dvd and compare if indeed the bluray used the same 2002 transfer. I have to be honest I saw this in the theater and many films since and don't remember seeing film grain in movies period that I have seen in the theater. Or it wasn't at any level that took away from the movie going experience. Here it definitely does.

I don't mind the fact that filters are used. Many films such as Superman and others have used them, especially filming women. Many scenes were obviosly put on top of one another for the special effects, no problem. Some scenes have excellent resolution and great detail. Some are quite horrid. Some of the stop motion looks surprisingly good like Pegusus compared to CGI! I think my biggest ***** here is a new transfer was warranted and I don't think this film got it. Don't charge $35 for a 2002 transfer slapped onto bluray. The picture needs to be tweaked period! My biggest complaint is the awful level of film grain here and it is nothing short of horrible. I have no issue with studios using DNR up to the point you start to lose detail. It is better than watching a film through a cloudy layer of film grain.

All in all I think a new transfer really could have done this film some justice especially with the renewed interest. I also am getting tired of lazy ass studios releasing good catalogue titles and using 10 year old dvd transfers which we have seen a lot of in the last year. If they are not going to bother tweaking the picture to some degree don't bother releasing the title and putting half assed products on the shelves to gouge consumers with.

I always had such fond memories of this movie. Recently, my son and I saw the theatre display and trailer for the new Clash of the Titans and I told him about it being a remake. He wanted to see the original and we NetFlix'd it that night and it was horrible. He kinda liked it but it wasn't nearly as EPIC as my mind remembered it to be.

I was glad I watched it as I was planning on buying the blu-ray thinking it to be better then it actually is.
