Default Martin Scorsese wants to see 'DRAMAS' in 3D!

Thursday, March 04, 2010
Quote:

Welcome Aboard Martin Scorsese! Visionary Director Wants To See Dramas in S3D!

Jim here. Martin Scorsese has come out of the 2D shadows with very public aspirations to create his own 3D drama in the future. The AP (via FirstShowing) reports that he has come down firmly on 3D's side - the side wanting ubiquitous 3D in all forms of visual entertainment - drama included.

Scorsese ponders: "We see in depth, for the most part. We go to the theater — it's in depth. Why couldn't a film like PRECIOUS be in 3-D? It should be."

He expounds further:
"I'd love to do one" (so long as he can still move the camera the way he'd like to). "It just seems natural that we'd be going in that direction. It's going to be something to look forward to, but to be used interestingly."

I agree!! What a wonderful moment to hear one Hollywood's legendary directors speak so boldly about stereoscopic 3D. There will be moments I remember throughout my media career and this one is definitely among them.

Later in the excellent article, director Chris Columbus states that: "It's right out there, somebody just needs to do it." (speaking of dramas in S3D).

And Tim Burton chimes in: "It's just another tool. In fact, I'm very interested in kind of exploring it on some other levels, because it's like sound. 3-D is just another element to draw you in a little bit more, that's all."

You see, these guys get it. I love seeing this all happen around us as 3D flourishes. Moreover, I am still amused at the naysayers out there who continue to try and prove that their original notion of 3D being a gimmick is valid. Clearly they are in error. As Hollywood legend after legend signs up for S3D, the purveyors of perceived gimmickry are dying an agonizing death. Better to just throw up your hands now gentlemen. You were wrong. And that's ok. ;-)

Drama is all about the characters and environment. S3D heightens our immersion into the movies if done correctly and that is what Scorsese is talking about. I hope he leads the pack in releasing a S3D drama soon.

This post deserves to drive this home: MARTIN SCORSESE loves S3D!!

I don't know how a feel about this. I am not a fan of 3-D to begin with. I am sure other would enjoy it.

I struggle to see how 3-D will more of a pro in Drama's than a con.

It seems highly unnessacary

Is it me or this 3D trend is becoming annoying?

I mean Precious, is Scorsese serious about this?

Good, he can remake "Bwana Devil".
(Come to think of it, DeNiro would be good for an updated "Gorilla at Large"...)

Seriously, you could see the first 50's craze toy with every genre--
Hitchcock tried suspense, MGM tried a musical, Warner and Disney tried cartoons, every other studio tried a Western, we got porn, chop-socky, and we even got a few noirs like "Inferno"...

For some reason...it was the sci-fi's and the horrors that stuck.

The more you tighten your grip, directors & producers, the more viewers will slip through your fingers

How would 3d be a con in anything? It seems people saying 3d is a gimmick are the same people who would have said color is a gimmick too. What is gimmicky about seeing a movie in the most realistic manner possible?

I didn't think 3d in avatar was gimmicky at all, it added to the experience for me. I hope for the same when I see Alice in wonderland tomorrow night.

I am with the previous 11 of 12 posters, this does not sound like a very good thing.

Did audiences have to put special glasses on to see a movie in color? Did they have to put special headphones on to hear a movie in sound or surround sound? No. Ergo, your comparison is invalid.

The most realistic way possible to see a movie is using your own 2 eyes, your own brain and your own experiences to analyse what is being told by the story

So having to wear glasses makes it a gimmick but buying anew tv that displays color, and/or additional speakers, a receiver that can output discrete channels and media that outputs it isn't a gimmick? All of the items you mention required additional equipment, I don't see where a gimmick is defined as having to wear something on your face.

People obviously hate 3d given the all time top grossing film was in 3d.

Clueless. Who are you to tell me what does and doesn't bother me when I'm watching a movie? I have strong peripheral vision. The glasses distracted the hell out of me during Avatar because I was always aware of them sitting on my nose. It took me out of the experience. I'm used to ignoring my nose of course, but I'm not used to having glasses on when I watch a movie so it was pretty distracting.

If depth isn't important to realism I suggest donating one of your eyes to someone who could use it.

Correction:

People like 3D but have an issue with it if every upcoming film is in 3D.
