This is the same scenario that happened with Steven Spielberg for example. During the format war Steven refused to have his movies released on HD-DVD, to ask what was his motivation? Obviously, he wanted BD to win and become the mainstream format.

As for Scorsese I am thinking he obviously wants 3D to be an option to every film out there. I am guessing in a sense this would make it mainstream (Idea wise).

You seem to forget one of the most basic principles of filmmaking: composition. Filmmakers using composition to frame their shots in a confined environment is part of what can make a film so interesting, having that limited range to work with. 3D breaks those boundaries and ruins the idea of composition (in my opinion), unlike the introduction of color or widescreen (which expands the range but still keeps it confined). A painter paints on a board or paper just as a filmmaker showcases their work on a screen. So yes, I consider 3D to be a gimmick for the most part because it circumvents the idea of composition to try and fool an audience in becoming more immersed. I think well made movies should be able to do that without jumping out at you. My .02
+1

Give me a director who knows how to compose well, tease us with focus, and subtle zoom work and I am very happy.

I personally think 3D looks fake as hell. Yes, there is the appearance of some depth, but to me it looks highly artificial. It looks manufactured and unnatural.

I dont suffer from eye strain or headaches and I STILL dont like it.

I don't see why people are so anti-3d. He and the other directors are right - 3d is just another tool to enhance the immersion into the film.

If you don't like 3D, 100% of 3D film have been released to theaters and home video in 2D editions.

Right, but it's the idea that the movie is being made for 3D to begin with and the thought process that 3D could slowly dissolve away the idea of 2D. I'm not saying it has or it's going to, just the idea behind it.

Like I said before, go watch a stage play. Drama? Check. 3-D? Check. Need for glasses? Only if you have bad vision

When I watch a 3D movie, this is what I am reminded of. Not realistic.

No, his motivation was to appear as the self-appointed Artistic Rights/Film Preservation/Director-Freedom spokesman at large, and defend the idea of "3D's going to become really serious someday!", just because everyone was picking on James Cameron as a director and saying Avatar wasn't a "real" movie.
(It wasn't, btw. )

Which is all very good, but...you can see how much of a conditioned reflex it's starting to become with him now.
Marty's still in his TCM "Defend the director's integrity of widescreen" mode, and doesn't realize how silly "Defend the director's integrity of 3-D" sounds when we've got Cameron, Disney and Zemeckis spoiling it all over the place.

Why couldn't a film like PRECIOUS be in 3-D?
Because there would be ZERO point, 3D doesn't make any movie better. It would just be stupid. Why wasn't everyone talking like this before Avatar? If it had of flopped, they still wouldn't be.

Depth isn't important to anything. If I can see something slightly in the background of something else, it doesn't mean shit. Go see a live show if you want depth.

I was, and I think 3D can enhance dramas, as it can reveal the entire 3 dimensions of a performance.
