Default AVS is neutral, LOL!

Sorry to bring out another post about AVS. But their Main page links to this:
http://www.htguys.com/archive/2007/October26.html by Braden Russell

We try to be as format neutral as possible, after all what really matters is that you're watching movies in high definition. Who cares what disc format you use, right? To be fair, and to set the record straight, we'll go over all the specs for the two formats and see who has the edge in each category. By all accounts this format war is still neck and neck.

What came off as odd:
Quote:
Audio Codecs

* HD-DVD, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, DTS-ES (all required in some form)
o DTS-HD High Res up to 3 Mbps and DTS-HD Master Audio up to 18 Mbps; Dolby Digital Plus up to 3 Mbps and Dolby TrueHD up to 18 Mbps.
* Blu-ray, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital*, DTS-ES* (*=required, all others optional, meaning they aren't supported on many players)
o DTS-HD High Res up to 6 Mbps and DTS-HD Master Audio up to 24.5 Mbps; Dolby Digital Plus up to 1.7 Mbps, and Dolby TrueHD up to 18 Mbps
* Advantage: HD-DVD
WTF??? No mention of uncompressed PCM and the lack of hddvd titles with them.

Quote:
Studio Support

* HD-DVD, Paramount, DreamWorks, New Line, Universal, Warner, the Weinstein Company, Studio Canal
* Blu-ray, Sony Pictures/MGM/Columbia TriStar, Buena Vista, Disney/Touchstone/Miramax, Fox, Warner, Lions Gate
* Advantage: Neutral
Not neutral. Just look at all the new releases this year and Blu-ray has this advantage hands down.

Quote:
IT Support

* HD-DVD, Microsoft, Intel, HP, NEC, Toshiba, Sanyo
* Blu-ray, Apple, Dell, Benq, HP, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, TDK
* Advantage: Neutral
I haven't taken math class in years, but I do see more companies next to blu-ray.

Quote:
Titles available

* HD-DVD, ~320
* Blu-ray, ~320
* Advantage: Neutral
There are more blu-ray titles. Look at neutral retailers and you'll see that.

I couldn't agree more. If it wasn't for the fact that the forum has many other very good discussion boards on other products, then they would almost certainly be an 'official' HD DVD backer. They have shown their preference time and time again. But since the high-def disc wars is only a small part of what the overall forum is all about, they don't want to officially back the wrong horse and risk losing their notoriety in other home theatre areas.

There is a VERY good reason people call the high-def media section AVM$, though.

And that is part of the key there. TrueHD is only required in 2.0 form, but they seem to like to leave that out. They can argue that all players can actually decode 5.1 TrueHD (not counting the LG dual player that isn't officially HD DVD compliant because of missing HDi support), which is more than the requirement, and that is true. However, the most popular HD DVD player (probably accounts for around half their players or so) is the XBOX360 with add-on and while it can decode 5.1 of TrueHD, it has to convert it either to 2.0 or lossy before it outputs it. So, you can go by the specs or what the players actually do, but either way the TrueHD can be a little misleading if people are led to believe they can actually get 5.1 lossless from TrueHD, no matter which player they buy.

BTW: He should change his studio support to Blu-ray's favor. He calls it neutral when he has an error in there with New Line on the HD DVD side only. Not only are they releasing on both, but most of their day-and-date stuff is coming to Blu-ray first and then HD DVD later. I'm not sure about Studio Canal and whether they are even still releasing things. Have they claimed that they are HD DVD exclusive? Amir kind of talked around that one. And Paramount has even said that the exclusivity doesn't apply to Spielberg directed titles, so that affects the amount of weight they should be given as far as which side has the best studio support, even if it is a small amount. I think it would be pretty pitiful if he fixes his New Line error and still claims studio support is neutral, so hopefully he will do the right thing.

I don't get it. those points are blatantly false, on top of the no mention of uncompressed PCM.

1) they separate Paramount and Dreamworks for HD DVD, but they gatehr Sony and MGM, and Disney and Miramax for Blu Ray ?

2) They count separately Weinstein from Warner (cf above about no sepration for Blu Ray). but in the Blu Ray camp they wont count separately New Line who for now only releases new stuff exclusively Blu Ray ?

3) In the same studio line up, Studio Canal went neutral not long aggo and thus should also count in Blu Ray.

4) In the IT support, Blu should also list Sun Microsystem, developper of Java, as we ll as Acer who Ive read is now backing up Blu Ray (I think that makes all 4 top PC makers in Blu Ray camp).

That is f@cked to high hell. Honestly, how does one not mention uncompressed.

AVS seriously need an anti-AVS site put up. Specifically targeting the amount of erroneous information.

It needs to be called AVS forums. Exact same colours and setup, with the only exception that it is made to undermine that forum.

and the fact is they just made themselves look stupid for showing how bias they are..30 is now "=" to 50..so the extra 20 GB does not matter ... yup gotcha tell that to people backing up their DATA that need it.

I've looked at AVS forum and they do have a Blu-ray area. They also have an area for HD DVD. I guess people should expect bias one way or another since that site is open for all sides.

You obviously never spent much time there because threads in the "neutral" area which are pro-blu-ray or ant-HDDVD get locked quickly but anti-blu-ray or pro-HDDVD threads stay open.

They also like to censor threads regularly in the blu-ray section.

True, I haven't spent a lot of time there. What time I have spent shows me excesses on both sides, just as I have found useful informaion on both sides.

Any time there is a competition of any sort that involves humans, there will be exaggeration, hyperbole, and outright cheating at some time or another. Competition tends to bring out the worst in people, in my opinion.

I've stopped listening to their podcast. They're idiots, and in love with HD-DVD. Just last week, one of them said on the show "Are there any dual-layer Blu-rays released yet?" and the other one didn't know the answer.

Isn't the HD rant thread about the mods of AVS? This was posted in the main page of AVS, not the forums.
