I buy a LOT of TV boxsets and most of the shows I like are not out on BD, and many either never will be, or will be out in a lonnng time (Star Trek DS9, Buffy, Twin Peaks, Sex and the City, Friends, The West Wing, X-Files, Veronica Mars, Prime Suspect, The Wire, BBC shows like The Office, Fawlty Towers, This Life...). I'm pretty happy to consider the DVDs of many of these definitive. Some others I know may well come out eventually (the HBO ones especially) but I'm happy having the complete DVD sets of them for now. The only one I'll probably wait for is Sopranos, but at this rate I may cave and buy the DVD. I still buy DVDs for shows not available on BD, and have no problem doing so. I want to buy The Simpsons on DVD and the existence of BD will not stop me cos I don't expect releases of the older seasons for ages.

More recent shows/shows which are available though I do want to get on BD but haven't been able to afford to yet (BSG, Dollhouse, Dexter, Weeds, Mad Men, True Blood).... I would not get these on DVD.

When it comes to films I'll only buy on BD if they are out. There are a few films I think will take ages to come out and if they are cheap, I will get them on DVD because I still like collecting films I like in general (recently I bought The Swimmer and 3 Women, 2 relatively obscure films which I wouldn't expect a BD release of for ages, and also the animated 101 Dalmations because it probably wont get a BD release for ages)

So basically I will buy on BD if available, or wait if there is a vague idea on when/if it will be released. For everything else, I'll get on DVD.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the type who only buys Blu-rays unless that's not an option.

I only buy blu unless it's something that will likely NEVER come out on blu, like Classic Series Doctor Who, Blackadder, and other stuff like that.

I don't buy sitcoms period. But, in answer to your general question...

The only DVDs I can remember that we bought in the past two years or so were:
1) Paranormal Activity - my wife wanted to see it, but didn't want to pay for the BD. If it was a movie I cared about, I'd have tried to convince her. I believe the PQ and AQ wouldn't benefit much from BD anyway.
2) Do the Right Thing - my wife needed it for a class, and based upon the severe color timing change, I recommended the Criterion DVD. I then regretted it, but it turned out the decision was correct, because she and her classmates had to watch it using a laptop. If I had bought the BD instead, they wouldn't have been able to watch it.

Otherwise, I don't buy DVDs anymore. When I read that the new Prisoner remake would be released in DVD only, I thought "they lost at least one sale - from me."

Last DVD I bought was months ago when the new Kenny vs Spenny was released, only on dvd so no option there. The last one before that was the year prior when the season before that came out.

I even find myself avoiding watching a movie thats on tv that I have never seen if its on blu or expected to make it there sometime soon.

The only DVD's I buy now are certain TV shows I like, I see no reason to get them on blu ray available or not b/c for some reason I dont care if they are in HD and they are way cheaper for the DVD. Shows such as the Office, South Park, and Family Guy if it was avaialble on blu.

Other TV shows such as Lost and Heroes I have to own on Blu for some reason, maybe b/c there more action oriented and not comedy...I dunno why Im like that.

I buy both. In general if it's a TV show or comedy, it's a DVD purchase. If it's a visually impressive film or series, it's going to be Blu-Ray.

My family (wife and 2 daughters) mostly watch TV comedies, from Seinfeld to Curb Your Enthusiasm to Flight of the Conchords to older series like Taxi and MASH. We don't see much of a benefit in having these in HD. Higher definition isn't going to make the shows funnier. Just a little clearer. Ergo, not worth the cost of an upgrade.

There's more to the game than visual clarity.

I only recently got a Blu-ray player this past Christmas and money's been pretty tight so I haven't been able to get too many new BRD's (Blu-ray discs if nobody figured that out lol), just the couple I got for Christmas. I've bought a couple combo packs though before I had the player just because I knew I'd eventually upgrade and since it has both, it'd be better to just go ahead and get that. There's a couple of my DVDs I'd like to upgrade to Blu-ray, but most of them will stay normal DVDs, but any new movie I get I'll get Blu-ray unless it's only on DVD

The only TV related thing I've bought so far has been Planet Earth over Christmas, discoverystore.com had it for $25 so i jumped at that.. I prefer the Discovery Store exclusive US cover to the UK one that's sold in stores.. but I haven't gotten any more.. It would really just depend on the show, stuff like Lost, Fringe and those type of shows I'd want on Blu-ray, but most of the other shows I watch wouldn't be worth the extra price.. I'd like to get some shows like Firefly and season 1 and 2 of Pushing Daisies and Dollhouse (whenever season 2 comes out), if they did a full season Blu-ray release of Glee I might consider that. If it's an older show and only recently starting doing Blu-ray (like Supernatural and The Office), I'd just keep buying normal DVDs, if even that.

As for Lost, I'm waiting for the complete series for that later this year

For the most part, I'll be Blu-ray only now. I only find sci-fi/fantasy/action/adventure-type movies/tv shows worth it buying on blu-ray. That's really all I like anyway. lol. Comedies or romance don't seem worth it most of the time. The only exception was (500) Days Of Summer. Gotta have my Zooey in HD.

With that analogy, what series or movies are worth the upgrade? Horror movies don't get scarier in HD, dramas don't get sadder in HD. That would only leave the action flicks.

Good point, and does blu-ray make the action movies actionier?

I'll get a sitcom on blu if it is available on blu. e.g. wife and I have S1-S3 of How I Met Your Mother on DVD and S4 on blu. If the first 3 seasons are made available on blu then I might consider double dipping if the price is right.
