Can someone please explain to me why I cannot play sound through my TV and stereo at the same time from my PS3?
I can't always use the stereo when I watch a movie so if I want to hear sound I have to go in to the settings of my PS3 and change the sound output to RCA. When I can play it through the surround sound then I have to go back to the settings and switch it to optical. My receiver nor my TV have HDMI so it may work with that, I have no idea... It's really a hassle though and is inexcusable. My PS2 did it, my xbox did it and my 360 as well as my regular DVD player does it. |

I have no idea but I'm sure that probably works. I could probably use the pass-thru on my receiver as well I just didn't want to configure it that way since I haven't had to in the past. |

I made a thread about this months ago. (I ended up getting no answers and most of the people thought I needed a professional installer cause I didn't know how to set up my system.)
Here was my post. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ht=malfunction Quote:
Anyway, I still have times when all of a sudden sound works from my T.V. without the HDMI source being chosen. I don't have a HDMI receiver - so for now I"m stuck with this. But even if I did have a HDMI receiver - I don't want to have to turn on my receiver everytime I want sound out of my T.V. This is a hassle and from my response from the PS3 reps - it can not be fixed. |

I could very well be wrong, but it may have something to do with how the signal is processed for output. Most standalones are hardware driven, but the PS3 is all about the software and the clock cycles, by not processing the signal for the non-used output, it may save processing power? It could also be that if you are outputing to TosLink a format that the RCA can't handle, such as bitstream, the RCA goes silent... have you tried setting it up for TosLink with two channel stereo? Not sure if it will work, but if you strip it down to the least common denominator, it may work.
When mixing and matching audio outputs, strange things happen, when I have the computer hooked up to speakers, it works fine, but when I hook up via TosLink to the Stereo, I loose the ability to control volume at the PC, the output becomes a line out, rather than a pre-amp out. But you really have to admit, most people would not be playing audio over both the optical AND the RCA. As for this being "inexcusable"? Just a wee bit of a hyperbole isn't it? |

the only thing that I did is use a y-adapter one goes into the tv and the other into my stereo.

If it is truly a software issue that cannot be fixed then fine but if it is an oversight or a bug then I want it fixed because it tarnishes my experience. For me, my $600 ps3 not doing something a $129 ps2 can do is inexcusable when it is pretty much standard these days. |

i feel your pain, thrlride.
i've got HDMI to the TV and toslink to my cheapy surround system, i would love to be able to get audio pumping out of both simultaneously. i don't believe it's a harware issue since it has "malfunctioned" a couple times to me. from what i can figure (and from what i've read elsewhere) it's a glitch that happens depending on what order you turn stuff off and back on again, and possibly what the PS3 was doing before it was turned off previously. heck, last time it happened i left the PS3 on for about a week straight just to keep it "malfunctioning". once i get a proper receiver with HDMI (and passthru) i won't care anymore, but it would be nice for sony to include this in a firmware update sometime. |

Use the Y splitter on the analog cable (L/R audio plug) and buy a LONG L/R stereo audio cable. That way you have audio coming through your receiver and TV at the same time. That is what you want, right (sound through both devices)? That way you still have the optical cable still plugged into your receiver for the better sound during movies. All you have to do is switch your software settings on the PS3 when you want to watch movies (and change your input on your receiver). That should be a pretty simple solution.

I guess I am confused, sorry.
I'm splitting the RCA cable from the PS3 and sending it to the receiver as well as the optical? |

I still dont uderstand why anyone would want audio from both the TV and the reciever.
The 5.1 signal is now coming from the front and you no longer can decipher the sound as it was meant to be heard. Sony was right for not incuding a way to ruin the sound experience. If sometimes you dont want to hear the audio from all angles, you can hit a button on your reciever and select stereo. |

When you want better sound for movies, just switch the input on your receiver and PS3 to the optical input/output. |

See, I don't have RCA cables from my PS3 - I have HDMI to my T.V. (For Pic and sound) and optical to my receiver - for home theater.
I don't want them to play "at the same time" - what I want is to be able to turn on the "source" and have sound come out without having to go into the PS3 sub-menus to change it. If I turn on my T.V. - sound should come out. If I turn on my receiver - sound should come out. I have audio running to both, but the PS3 makes me choose just one. I don't want to use RCA cables. Hope that clears things up for you all. And, as I mentioned before - my PS3 "malfunctions" and sometimes plays from my T.V. through my HDMI cable, even though "optical" is selected. It comes and goes. Wish it would stay - cause I don't always want to use my home theater for sound, but I'm forced to go and change it to HDMI to listen through my T.V. and then switch back when I want to hear it through my home theater. Very annoying. |

I think the most logical hypothesis about why this isn't possible on the PS3 is the decoding issue, but I don't know for sure. The simplest solution might be finding your "RCA Audio Out" on the back of your receiver and connecting that to the TV. Leave the PS3 in Toslink mode at all times, and just turn the receiver down and the tv up when you want to keep things quiet. |
