Default Sony BDP-S570 Super Audio CD

I purchased the Sony BDP-S570 today and it is great except for one small thing. I cannot get the unit to play back Super Audio CDs in multi channel.
My Denon receiver shows two channels in and two out once the play button is chosen. The units are connected via HDMI 1.3 cable. Is it possible that HDMI 1.4 is necessary for this function? Movies play back in 5 channel as they should. Under Music Settings, Super Audio CD and DSD Multi are chosen. I called Tech support at Sony and they cannot figure this one out either. I was given a case number to call a higher level of support.
I won't have time to call them for a couple of days so I thought I would post this issue here to see if anyone else with this player has this issue. Thanks in advance!!

First, since most SACDs contain separate two channel & multichannel areas on disc, you may have to select the multichannel area.

Second, if you have a lower model Denon AVR, it may not accept DSD input via HDMI.

One more thought. Not all SACDs are multichannel. Some are purely two channel. Are you certain that the affected SACD(s) is/are multichannel?

Default RE: Sony BDP-S570 Super Audio Cd

AJ,

Thanks for your thoughts. I have indeed chosen multichannel on the unit.
As for the CDs, they are multichannel and not 2 channel. I know this because I played them in multichannel several years ago before buying my first BluRay player. The Denon receiver I am using is the AVR 2807 so it is about 3 yrs old.

Unfortunately, the Denon 2807 is an HDMI 1.1 AVR. As such, it supports Dolby Digital, DTS, multichannel LPCM, et al. But it does not support DSD, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, et al. For DSD, your AVR needs to have HDMI 1.2a (or greater); for the next gen Blu-ray codecs, it needs to have HDMI 1.3 (or greater).

One final thought. See if the Sony S570 can convert multichannel DSD to multichannel PCM for HDMI output. Your Denon 2807 will accept multichannel PCM via HDMI.

That it does!

DSD Output Mode

On: Outputs DSD signals from
the HDMI OUT jack when
playing a Super Audio CD.
When “On” is selected,
analog signals are not output
when playing a Super Audio
CD.

Off: Outputs PCM signals from
the HDMI OUT jack when
playing a Super Audio CD.

Thanks to everyone for your help. It seems the culprit is my Denon AVR. The 2807 does not support SACD via HDMI. The 2808C model was the first to do so.

It will though if you have the player output it as PCM.

You should try that. It's still SACD via HDMI and it still sounds great.

I don't know but I have read that many AVR's that accept DSD then convert it to PCM anyways. It's supposed to be a lossless digital process that doesn't degrade the signal. Listen to it and you will likely believe it, because it does sound great.

Warren:

I'm curious as to whether you followed BHampton's suggestion, switched your 570 DSD setting to "Off" and whether you got your multichannel SA-CD playback . . .

Just my own experience.... I have a S370 which is nearly identical to the S570 (but will not get a FW update for 3D and does not have wifi built in.) I played back my Dark Side of the Moon SACD using my Denon AVR788 which I thought had DSD processing. I got no sound but then I had the player send out PCM and got the multi-channel. Exactly as I used to with my PS3.
