Default "THE MONSTER SQUAD" remake

Quote:
Paramount Pictures is remaking the 1987 film The Monster Squad. Rob Cohen, who produced the original, hopes to direct the remake. Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and they’re meeting with writers.

A group of kids who worship the classic monsters suddenly discover that Dracula is in town, and he’s got his pals Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy with him. The kids must stop their efforts to find an amulet that will give the creatures control of the world. Sounds a bit cheesy, but the film is beloved by fanboys.

The script was written by Fred Dekker and Shane Black before Lethal Weapon made the latter Hollywood's highest paid writer of the 1990s. Cohen was one of the producers on that film and many others before he transitioned to the director's chair. The film is at Paramount after Platinum Dunes moved there last fall.

I watched this film on Blu about two days ago and it had been a long time since I had seen it. I am huge fan of this film because it was one of those movies that I grew up with and loved when I was a kid, but I can honestly say that it could use a remake. Now as an adult and after all the film and writing classes I took in college I found it to have a very weak story and pointless plot. The movie could have easily been an hour and it is short as it is. It just doesn't have very good character development as most of the kids are not even touched upon. But anyway it could use a little retooling and an update on the effects because those rubber bats were horrible.

It's getting a remake because of 80's nostalgia (if you didn't think that was what's fueling the craze, you do now)--
But I was in that theater in 1987, and it flopped back then, too.

Yeah, maybe in hindsight, "Fat Kid" and "Scary German Guy"'s character development might have benefited from having actual names in the script...

I'm kinda surprised there remaking this I guess it makes sense cause there are a lot of people out there that never heard of The Monster Squad like people my age or even younger which is really sad cause it is one of the best 80s movies.

They are remaking EVERYTHING from our childhood pics i.e.Teen Wolf/Smurfs/The Goonies. The kids of the 80's are the driving force of the consumer market now. We experienced it then & now we want our kids to experience it. (what they believe) I wish they'd just come up w/fresh ideas and leave the classics alone.

"You kicked Wolfman in the nards!" hahahaha or "Would you like some apple pie?" I love this movie, grew up with it as a kid and watched it all the time. It'll be interesting to see what they do in the remake. I am surprised that Platinum Dunes is doing this usually they stick to the main thrashers for remakes.

This remake stuff is getting freaking ridiculous. I don't understand how hollywood can't come up with new ideas for movies anymore, it's just out of this world. Make movies based on books at the very least, hell I could come up with a few movies off the top of my head. CRIPES!

I loved this movie growing up. For a low budget 80s flick the monsters look great, especially the Creature from the black lagoon.

It's a kiddie horror film, of course powerful creatures will die easily, always made sense to me. I saw it a few times as a child, seeing it again on blu-ray was like seeing it again for the first time.

It's PG-13, so it's not that kiddie.

I would expect such monsters to put up more of a fight.

I would expect Abraham Van Helsing to be in the movie for more than 10 seconds also so I guess we're both disappointed.

And I asked it then, and I ask it now:
What real monster-fan kid in existence hero-worships Van Helsing?
(Peter Cushing, maybe, but the character??)

...I mean, seriously!

Yeah well I don't have any kids and I wasn't born in the early 80s I was born in 88 but I still agree with what your saying. it is shitty that they are remaking almost every single classic movie that is out there. That is the trend in the industry right now until they can come up with new and fresh ideas.

This was one of my top 5 favorite movies as a kid along with the likes of Goonies,Gremlins,Lost Boys, etc. I will be pissed if they try and give it a hip hop spin like the new karate kid. I used to watch this movie over and over again as a kid with my little sister and I remember my big sister thought Ryan Lambert was hot, For years after that I called my lis sis fat kid! even though she wasn't fat as a kid. We used to always reenact the part where fat kid gets accosted by the 2 bullies in the beginning where they ask what makes a fat kid fat. Excellent 80's classic. I was hurt when I found out Horace died in the mid 90's. I hope they don't screw it up!

I could deal with this. As long as they stick with the original "fun factor" involved with the first production, this could prove to be quite an entertaining project. What they need to do though is steer clear of "taking the material too seriously." Too many of these remakes are becoming a bit too serious with themselves for my liking. I want to see this done with "campy and cheesy" in mind while just upgrading the make-up and special effects. Hell, I'd even say go ALL PRACTICAL with the effects to add that 80's nostalgic feel to it.

Monster Squad Remake to Use Classic or New Monsters?

Quote:
Platinum Dunes continues is remake rampage across Hollywood, steering away from the slasher fare and latching, this time, onto an '80s genre kid classic: The Monster Squad.

Originally directed by Fred Dekker, the update will be produced by the Platinum Dunes team - Andrew Form, Brad Fuller and Michael Bay - as well as Rob Cohen and Paramount Pictures.

Shock inquired about the status of the project with Fuller today who told us: "I'm in the process of finding a screenwriter. I'm meeting with writers every day. So we'll get someone in the next two or three weeks and get them writing."

The original film resurrected Universal's classic monsters, tapping into a healthy obsession many kids growing up in the '80s had with the creatures. But now faced with a new generation, does Platinum Dunes intend to revive these familiar faces again or can we expect a new line-up of foes? "That's something we're definitely talking to writers about and I don't have an answer for you yet," Fuller said.

He maintained, "We're definitely using the original film as a blueprint and love the fun parts of it. We have three or four different takes, some stick closely to the original - others are going to be a bit different. It's about sitting down with Rob Cohen and the studio and figuring out which storyline we're going to go with. But I can tell you all of the story lines, whereas Friday the 13th isn't like the original, this will be close to the original. It's about a group of kids who have a monster squad, monsters come to their town and they've got to figure it out."

The Monster Squad opened in '87 and was written by Dekker and Shane Black.
